Leicestershire / Re: Harrold sisters of Hinckley and London?
« on: Monday 14 February 22 16:26 GMT (UK)  »
Ive just seen this burial.
'Elizabeth Harrold, 20 Oct 1782 of St James Garlickhythe, London, Non-Conformist, Countess Of Huntingdon's Connexion. Aged 34' (Birthdate 1748).
Fits with Edward Harrold being a Widower in 1783. The age also fits being Elizabeth Elliot who married Edward Harrold in Hinckley. I wonder if this is indeed them?

Great work, It certainly looks like a possibility.
I can see an Edward Harrold marries an Elizabeth Elliot in Hinckley 1771 and after this the only baptism I could find is an Elizabeth bapt 1773 Hinckley to Edward and Elizabeth. Nothing after that in relation to this pair, at least in Hinckley.
Then there is a Presbyterian baptism in Hinckley 1751 for Edward Harrold, son of John and Rachel.
I wonder if Edward Harrolds children were also baptised non-conformist and this is the reason I cant find any baptisms. I know that some records either haven't been transcribed or are simply lost when it comes to non-conformers.

Leicestershire / Harrold sisters of Hinckley and London?
« on: Sunday 13 February 22 18:08 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find the parents of 3 Harrold sisters (Or at least I believe them to be sisters), Who were born in London but all marry in Hinckley. There are several Harrold families in Hinckley but I can find no baptisms for these 3. I descend from Jane.

Jane Harrold. Born c1792.
Marries Thomas Follows, 11 Aug 1811 Hinckley, Leicestershire. Jane is 'Of Hinckley'. Jane's sister Ann and husband William Throne are witnesses.
1841 - 'Of Leicestershire'
1851 - 'Born London, Middlesex'
1861 - 'Born London, Middlesex'
1871 - 'Born London, Middlesex'
Uses the name Sophia/Sophie for two of her children, most likely naming after sister.

Jane dies 1872, aged 80 (1792).

Sophie/Sophia Harrold, Born c1785.
Marries William Dixson/Dixon, 12 Jul 1803 by license at Hinckley. Sophia is 'Of Hinckley'.
Marries 2nd, Thomas Deacon 30 Nov 1817 Hinckley.
1841 - 'Born outside of Leicestershire'
1851 - 'Born London, Middlesex'

Sophia dies 1854 aged 69 (1785).

Ann Harrold, Born c1790/1793.
Marries William Throne, 26 Sep 1811 Hinckley. Thomas Follows, Jane's husband is a witness.
1841 - 'Born outside of Leicestershire'
1851 - 'Born London, Middlesex'
1861 - 'Born London, Middlesex'

Ann dies 1870 aged 80 (1790)

Any help appreciated.

Thank you very much for this Ciderdrinker, Great work!

I had seen that baptism for John to a John and Frances but wasn't quite sure, but seems to fit nicely in being a mistake on the entry. Ill add that to my tree.

Thank you for this Ciderdrinker.

The no baptisms for both of them may indicate siblings as well as marrying the lodger of Henry.
I couldn't understand why there wasn't a baptism for either of them, so I think they are most likely illegitimate, especially how Henry doesn't list a father on his marriage record.

I confused another Sarah Geary, this Sarah who marries William Geary, appears to have been born (or at least states she was) in Ratby. There is no baptism for her but the only family baptising in this period there is John Ellis of Ibstock and Mary Mawly of Ratby who marry in 1788. I had come across this pair before in thinking that they were ancestors of my Henry. Interestingly this John Ellis (Given he is 'Of Ibstock'), appears to be an illegitimate son of John Ulrich Sultzer, Gentleman and Surveyor, and a Dorothy Ellis.

Although some trees (Which I don't give much stock to) give Henry as a son of John Ellis of Ratby and Sarah Wells who marry in 1817. I can see no reason to suspect this and this would give no reason as to why Henry would leave his fathers name blank on marriage and not have a baptism. Either way this John Ellis would appear to still be a son of John Ellis of Ibstock and Mary Mawley of Ratby.

Leicestershire / Ellis and Geary?
« on: Thursday 10 February 22 12:38 GMT (UK)  »
I have my 5th great grandfather Henry Ellis, as born abt 1817-1819. Either Ratby or Groby. He marries Sarah Sutton 1837 Ratby. Henry is underage and his father is left blank. There is no baptism for him anywhere. He states he was born in Ratby/Groby.
In 1841 a John Ireland is living with Henry in Ratby. This John Ireland goes onto marry a Mary Anne Ellis in 1841 Groby. Mary is born according to census and marriage c1821-1823 and gives her father as 'William Ellis, Labourer'. So I thought maybe she was a sister to my Henry. John Ireland dies in 1843 and Mary Anne remarries to a George Plant in 1846 Desford, but this time she gives her father as 'William Geary, Labourer'. She gives her birthplace as 'Narborough' on other census records.
There is no baptism for a Mary Ann Geary or a Mary Anne Ellis in Narborough or Groby/Ratby with a father called William fitting.
But there is a marriage in Ratby 1822 between a William Geary and Sarah Ellis, both appear to have been born c1790s, and Sarah maybe near Stoke Golding although I can see no baptism there for her.
I can see William and Sarah Geary living in Ratby/Groby in 1841 alongside a daughter Mary (Perhaps Mary Ellis?) and a son Charles born 1830.

Is it possible that Mary Anne and Henry are illegitimate children of this Sarah and were not baptised?

Warwickshire / John Large 1790 Nuneaton
« on: Wednesday 09 February 22 16:32 GMT (UK)  »
I have a will for a John Large, Victualler, of Nuneaton who wrote a will in 1787 stating his wife Joanna and daughter Joanna, plus other unnamed children. Will is listed as 1791 and estates is given as £100. Wife Joanna is Administrix.
His burial is in the Nuneaton register 'John Large' 25 December. Wife Joanna is still alive and appears to die in 1807 Nuneaton.

I thought I had John as being bapt Dec 1725 Witherley, Leicestershire (Village near Nuneaton, just over the border in Leicestershire) son of William Large and Sarah Waters.

I have John and Joanna's marriage as 12 July 1756 by banns, recorded at Cadeby, Leicestershire and Nuneaton, Warwickshire - 'John Large, of Nuneaton parish in the county of Warwickshire and Johana Sharp, of the parish of Cadeby'. Both sign their names. Then go onto have children baptised in Nuneaton. John is recorded on many occupational and quarter session rolls in Nuneaton as a 'Victualler' up until his death.

But I've just had a probate record appear through ancestry which gives different information, but I cant quite understand as it contradicts what I have.
'John Large, Letters of Administration. Estate under £100. John Large, late of Nuneaton in the county of Warwickshire, Cooper and Innkeeper (Fits with being a Victualler), A Widower (This is different from my information), Who died 25 December 1790 at Nuneaton (Fits with register), Letters were granted at the principal registry to Susannah Large of Morley, Yorkshire, the Administrix (With the will annexed) of the unadministered personal estate and effects of John Large, the son of the said deceased, she having been first sworn. The probate comes up under Administrations 1863.
My records show that John didn't have a son called John and if this is to do with a son John, why is John Sr mentioned? I cant find no record of this Susannah Large of Morley either?

Lincolnshire / Re: Mackinder

Are these Mackinders anything to do with the Mackinders/Mackenders of Lakenheath, Suffolk?
My grandfathers grandmother was a Mackender/Mackinder.

All of the Mackinders/Mackenders of Lakenheath can be traced to a Thomas Mackender/Mackinder who married Anne Roper there in 1752. There also appears to be a John Mackender/Mackinder who married a Hannah Roper sometime in 1750 as the baptise one child in 1751, So its seems as there were perhaps two brothers who entered this village from elsewhere as before the date of 1751 and 1752, there are no Mackenders/Mackinders anywhere in this area.

The family rumour so to say was that they descended from a Scottish prisoner who was sent with the others to drain the fens of Cambridgeshire. A lot of dutch and scottish prisoners were sent to do this after being captured at the battle of dunbar.

Whilst Thomas has signed his name, the 'T' here is similar to Elizabeth's surname possibility of 'T', just less of a curl at the start?
