Family History Beginners Board / I'm a bit stuck
« on: Friday 14 September 18 09:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have been following a trail of (now passed) relative's stories and looking at the records...and I'm already a bit stuck!

A man named John Hopper b.1/6/1858 Plymouth  - according to navy records and relative
it seems he married twice 1 - to Ellen Cook in 1880 and 2 - to Florence Helson in 1918

On GRO, there is only 1 John Hopper born in Plymouth in that time, birth registered in 1859, mother's maiden name - Counter

Can anyone find a marriage between a Hopper and a Counter? Or any idea how I can find more information about his parents?

A John Hopper appears on the 1871 Census with William and Mary Ann Hopper, although I can't seem to find a marriage certificate for Wm and Mary

Thank you

Have you looked at wills? The first ones here were proven locally, the second group are PCC (Prerogative Court of Canterbury).

Thank you, they are useful websites. I will have a good look through

The baptism records just show the parents as William as Susannah...if only I could find a handwritten  one that shows the occupation!!

There's a William James of right sort of age in household with a George Wilkes, Susannah Wilkes and a Mary James age 5. George Wilkes and Susanna James (widow) nee Healing married earlier in 1841. Her first husband was a William James who she married in Newent, Glos on 5 Feb 1833. Her marriage to George Wilkes was in St Mary de Lode Gloucester, James Addis was witness at both marriages. Other witness on 1833 marriage other witness was Sarah Healing and on 1841 marriage other witness was Sarah Addis - made mark both times - maybe same person and James Addis married Sarah Healing.

Did your William and Susannah have a son called William who married Susannah Healing?

no, I don't think so...if they did I haven't found him! Children so far are Joseph, Zachariah, Susannah, Mary and Thomas. I will look for that census though, thanks

I'm still learning!

I look at ancestry trees but I don't take them for granted....especially if there are no specific source citations.

Anyway, I am seeing if I can trace a William James any further back. He was born in Bromyard, Herefordshire around 1760-1770.

He married Susanna in 1794.

On find my past, there are 3 different Williams born in that time.

So we can try & help  :)

First of all how do you know he was born in Bromyard  :-\

Is this the marriage you are mentioning
William James
Susanna Roffe
30 Jun 1795
Marriage place   St Marylebone
The bride & Groom are both of the Parish

Where and when were the children of William & Susanna baptised

These are the details I have so far -
William James m. Susanna James 1794 Bromyard

5 children, all Bromyard,
Joseph (1798), Zachariah (1800), Susannah (1802), Mary (1804), Thomas (1811)

I came to this because I was following Zachariah. He is on the census 1841 - 1881.

Thank you

Thank you

I have researched the children...so far I haven't found anything. There is a William James on the 1841 Census, but he is living on his own and it could be 1 of the 3 (that I saw on find my past)

I will keep looking.

On the ancestry family trees, several of them state William's parents as John James and Hester Parton...not sure how to confirm that (other than messaging them). So, am a bit stuck. Do you have any suggestions please?
