are there any signs of you being related on more than one line?  I have quite a few as my father's side were in the same broad area for many years.

Have you used the Chromosome Browser tool -

Chromosome Browser
A tool for viewing shared DNA segments between you and multiple DNA Matches, which can help point to a common ancestor.

I've had a few successes  with it.

The only matches that I have that is close to that are 1st cousins.

Painter gives these possible relationships:

Add - what are the closest shared matches?

Hi Lizzie

I won't go through the results/investigative pathways, as you seem to have done a thorough examination, have you tried to contact him?

On the FamilyTreeDNA homepage, on the top navigation bar, hover your cursor over Upload DNA Data, and click Autosomal DNA on the drop-down menu.
You are directed to the autosomal DNA transfer page.

Complete the fields by entering the first and last name, email address, and sex of the person whose data you are transferring. (If you are transferring someone else’s data, make sure to enter their name and sex NOT yours.)

Also, you can't upload DNA files to Ancestry.
