It was Joseph Roy Bell from Middlesbrough, age about 20. He is buried in Middlesbrough.

Yorkshire (North Riding) Lookup Requests / Kirby Sigston burials / inscriptions
« on: Friday 03 November 06 22:31 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for burials of THOMPSON and NEWSAM in Kirby Sigston, ELIZABETH THOMPSON died about 1816. I know the rest seems very vague but as it's such a small place I think the burails would be quite limited. I went looking for the church there recently, wasn't sure if I was in the right place and stopped to ask a man who was outside one of the few houses I came across. When I asked if this was Kirby Sigston his response was 'Yes, who are you looking for?', which gives a pretty good indication of the size of the place! He directed me to the church but I couldn't read some of the headstones and was a bit nervous on my own as it was so isolated, so didn't really get far. Lovely place though  :)

World War One / World War 1 deaths

One of my ancestors died in 1916, I have some information that he was in the Yorkshire Regiment and suspect that he died during the war in military service. I haven't been able to find where his death was registered, what's the best place to look?  :(

Jane

Me! Like you Jane, I gravitated towards the coast..... 8)

I have never been to England...and in tracking my family this area is always leaving me confused! Now...I have family that once was a schoolmaster in Gisbourne...is that nearby Middlebrough? And a Stephenson who married a Donaldson from South shields...is that close to MIddlebrough? Houghton-Le-Spring?

Thank you...

I think you may mean Guisborough, clazey. It's about 10 miles from Middlesbrough (which, incidentally, comes up as North Yorkshire in the AA route planner!). It has been spelt a few different ways over the years, the registers for the town and the coastal area around Redcar are held there. South Shields is about 40 miles north, Houghton le Spring about 25 miles. Sorry about the miles, I'm not a metric sort of girl!  ;D
