I have relative that died in Tynemouth, Northumberland and was taken to Brampton in Cumberland to be buried in the Family Vault in 1815. How big would a Family Vault be?

The Lighter Side / Lost bookmark for Wills and Probate
« on: Wednesday 29 March 06 15:33 BST (UK)  »
I have lost a bookmark for a site which had a Wills and Probate index going back to the 1300's. :(
The site had an index A-Z, the records were part indexed to about the 1770's and the rest were scans of the images from the book. The info it gave was Name, Location, Date, Will, Admin etc.,
The site may have been a .ac.uk or .info site?
I seem to remember that i was looking for Medieval stuff when i originally found it.
It was not the National archives site.

Does this ring a bell with anyone or does anyone have the URL?  ???

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Chas and William Armstrong, Merchants
« on: Thursday 02 March 06 03:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I've hit a brick wall with my 5th great grandfather John Armstrong b.abt.1740, So i decided to see if i could go any further back with his cousin another John Armstrong b.1749, who was a witness at the wedding of my 4th great grandfather another John Armstrong b.1782.
I managed to find the parents of John Armstrong b.1749, they were John b.1708 and Jane Armstrong b.1718 but i could not get any further back.

I am now trying another route. The will dated 1815 of John Armstrong b.1749 mentions two relatives who were merchants down in London.
He doesn't say what relation they were, only that they were relatives.

They were Charles Armstrong Esq. of Hunter Street, Brunswick square, London and William Armstrong Esq. of Camberwell, Surrey.
Charles (known as Chas) and William were East Indies Merchants.

I have found a bit of info on them:-
They were listed in the trade directories in the Clements lane, Cornhill and Lombard street area of London up to about 1818, and at one time they were in partnership with Louis Bazelgette.

William's family as far as i have found were:-
William Armstrong, merchant
Elizabeth, wife
Emily, dau, b.23rd Jul 1811 c.Aug 23rd 1811
Elizabeth, dau, c.Feb 5th 1813
William, son, c.Jan 1st 1815
Charles, son, c.Mar 6th 1816.
All these Children were christened at Saint Giles, Camberwell.

I am trying to find out the age and place of birth of William and Charles if possible, ::) so that i can get back on track and go further back.

any help appreciated.

Durham / Durham Map
« on: Saturday 11 February 06 01:31 GMT (UK)  »
I have noticed that several people have asked for a place or street in a town/village in County Durham and have been pointed to streetmap or multimap. Streets and places get knocked down over the years and are not always mentioned on the modern maps.

Durham County Council have an excellent online map called the Geographic Information System, GIS for short. It allows you to view maps from the mid 1800's to the present day and an aerial view. This covers all of Co.Durham
http://www.durham.gov.uk/durhamcc/usp.nsf/pws/gis+-+online+mapping

If you want to know where the town/village is use streetmap, multimap etc, to get your bearings, then you can go to Durham GIS and see what the place was like when your ancestors were alive.
