Slight edit, think his State of birth might be Tennessee rather than South Carolina.

That does agree with the find a grave entry.

Thanks Sandra.  Came across that after I posted as well.  Need to find more info on his parents.

'Sealing' is the term used when a will that has been proved in another jurisdiction (eg Scotland) is sent to the English probate registry to be recorded there. There is no need for a further probate in England, as sealing is sufficient.

Sealing in itself gives rise to very little paperwork, and I was once advised by someone in the probate registry that anything I ordered from them would tell me no more than the index does.

In cases like this there will be some kind of grant outside of England, and this should be more informative; where this was might be apparent from the index, but if it isn't we might be able to help you trace it. You'd need to tell us more about your great grandfather - at least his name and where he lived and died.

Thanks - my great-grandfather was Arthur Henry Brace.  He died 23rd April 1955 in Newton Mearns, Renfrewshire.  The basic summary I game across just said "Brace Arthur Henry of 4 Broompark Drive Newton Mearns Renfrewshire 23rd April 1955 Confirmation of Bertha Brace Widow. Sealed London 13 July." The rumour was he apparently ignored his wife & 1 daughter in the will, was trying to find how true that was.

Thanks, where would I find the Date of Probate.  It appears to have been sealed in London, would assume this would be the registry office?

Is there anyway of seeing or ordering a copy my great-grandfather's will (died in 1955)?

Hi,

I'm trying to find more info on my 4x Great-grandfather, Henry Austin Miller, & his parents (my 5x great-grandparents).  Henry Austin was born 1st May 1807 in South Carolina I believe, married a Nancy Sears in Monroe, Indiana on 5th August 1830 & died 11th September 1882 in Oregon.  All I know about his parents is that his father was apparently called John.  Is there I can find and order a birth or marriage certificate or find anything else that will give more info on Henry Austin's parents?

Thanks,

Oli

Thanks all. Yes, looks like it was someone who worked at the hospital he died at rather than someone he lived with.  Would the 1987/88 electoral role be available if I wanted to check if was with someone then?

Hi Carole,

Thanks for the reply.  I can't see a relationship listed on his death certificate - closest I have is qualification which says "causing body to be cremated".

Looking at his death certificate again, it looks like she was at a different address - my grandfather at St. Stephens Gardens, W2 & the informant on Westbourne Terrace, W2.

Hi,

Hope this is the right area to ask.  What's the latest electoral roll one can see in the library etc?  I'm trying to work out whether the informant on my grandfather's death certificate (from 1988) could have possibly been a partner/girlfriend/lived with him or whether she was someone working at the hospital he died at.

Many thanks,

Oli
