Hi Gordon,

Interesting data but of course not all UK residents get the same figures.

I only get 96 (4th cousins or closer) out of a total of 8,745.

I also manage a few other UK kits;

1) 521 (4th cousins or closer) out of a total of 17,338
2) 230 (4th cousins or closer) out of a total of 11,586
3) 287 (4th cousins or closer) out of a total of 19,238

Hi Lisa,

You can transfer your raw data for free but the extra tools needed for analysis usually costs $29. I cannot remember if there was an option to pay in local currency so I guess you will have to pay online in US$ and see how much it costs when the invoice hits your bank. It is a one off fee so it is quite reasonable.

Here is a link to Diahan Southard's blog; "My Heritage DNA Advanced Tools: Worth $29 Unlock Fee?"

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Not on the list of matches?
« on: Tuesday 04 October 22 12:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi Essnell,

If you wish to compare DNA from different companies you are best served by uploading both sets of raw data to the GEDmatch site which was designed for just this purpose. Moreover you will get access to some useful tools that are not available on Ancestry such as the Chromosome Browser. There are several basic free tools and a subscription based Tier 1 suite of more complex tools. You could quickly compare your DNA with your daughter and see shared matches without having to wait for an Ancestry kit to be processed.

What are you hoping to get from a mtDNA test? Companies that offer mtDNA currently are FT DNA, 23andMe and Living DNA.

Yes as Ruskie suggests the Unlocking fee must apply to each kit. If you uploaded 20 sets of data from another company you cannot really expect My Heritage to unlock them all for free.

They do occasionally have Sales for a number of kits transferred during the Sale period. Thus,  "Right now, and through February 28th, you can transfer your DNA for free AND the $29 unlock fee is forever waived for the kits you transfer during this timeframe" was a promotion they did in Feb 21-28, 2021 (Roberta Estes DNAXplained blog accessed 08/09/2022)

Of course, if you have a subscription with My Heritage then you have access to all the tools. I have a Complete subscription and can use all the tools on all my DNA profiles.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Ancestry Communities
« on: Monday 05 September 22 14:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi @Lanc81,

Can you explain further? Surely the whole point behind a shared community is that you have shared matches who have their roots in a particular area.

I have a community of Coastal Northwest Germany, with Osnabrueck being the more specific place that my family was from. This fits as I have grandparents from North Rhine-Westphalia. I also have a few DNA matches who share the same community. On My Heritage the Genetic Groups are also pretty accurate with Germany (Detmold) being highlighted.

Hi,

Yes I would agree with Gadget that Ancestry DNA is probably the best one to test with as it has the largest global membership.

However from your post it appears that you have just one Italian grandparent so theoretically only a quarter of your matches could be Italian. You may find that you have many more Italian matches from USA than from Europe since DNA testing is not as popular outside the States.

Once you have tested at Ancestry you can transfer your raw data to MyHeritage and GEDmatch to get extra coverage.

PS Wait for a Sale event if you want to save a little money.

Hi @606missy,

If you are looking for professional help, particularly for Scottish roots and help with DNA, I would recommend you visit the LinkedIn website and search for Scottish Genealogy or Genetic Genealogy. There are some professionals who have a mix of skills. In cases where there are doubts about paternity then DNA is the only one truth that you have.

Good luck!

Hi Steve,

I would recommend that you take your case to a professional family historian or genetic genealogist. You can find a number of such experts on platforms like LinkedIn or Facebook. One would need access to all areas of Ancestry, My Heritage, GEDmatch and your family tree to make any sensible conclusions.

Hi Gadget,

Yes it's always interesting to see the latest tweaks. I am fortunate in having four grandparents with very different backgrounds. Consequently I only have 96 4th Cousins or closer. It's certainly worth checking out your matches ethnicities. One could easily put this data into a spreadsheet.

Thanks for the suggestion!
