The more I magnified the name from the link Heywood gave, the more I thought I could see the faintest line where the initial downstroke should be if it is a D.

I mucked about with contrast and brightness and I still think I see that downstroke?

If I have the right one, Ancestry has his name transcribed as Hanlan  but it is so difficult to read.

I have looked it as a negative too but still difficult to read. It might end with ‘an’
