Family History Beginners Board / Where else to search...
« on: Thursday 14 October 21 23:08 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I hope everyone is well and keeping safe? :)

To set the story...
I have a great, great uncle, Thomas Charles Raven who was born in Southam, Warwickshire, UK in 1878. He was one of twelve children and has (kind of) fallen off the face of the earth and I am unsure where to look next.

He was the first born to Edward Raven (1857-1941) and Kate Gardner (1861-1944) and Thomas is last recorded as alive on the 1891 Census as 13 years old living in Offchurch. By 1901 I assumed he may be living with a partner or off travelling and a spelling mistake may be why I can't find him. Then by 1911 census, it was written that Kate had 12 children, 6 living and 6 who had died. I counted the 6 alive in 1911 and knew then that Thomas had now passed somewhere between 1891 and 1911.

I cannot find anything. I'm stumped. There's no death record (i'd order a few a few years off that were a dead end), no parish record or even thinking it wasn't far off the time of the Boer war any enlistment record(s). I'm wondering where I could turn to to look next?

Thank you!

All the best

Family History Beginners Board / No Birth Record On GRO Website
« on: Wednesday 19 June 19 16:09 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

Sorry if something like this has been asked before, I did pop some keywords in the search bar but came up as confused as the query I have, haha!

Long story short there was a rumour about my great grandfather. Apparently he was born to a sibling of my Great Great Grandfather and handed over to him. Nothing more was said and I only found out about this myself, yesterday.
When searching the GRO website for his birth certificate I came up blank. Tried variations of his name and tried searching by the birth year (with 2 years either side) and what would of been his (possible adoptive) mums maiden name....nothing.
This leads me to believe the rumour but I am double confused as my great grandfather served in world war 2. Due to the 100 year privacy laws I cannot view those documents on ancestry websites but I would have thought his birth certificate would of been needed to enlist and possibly needed for his marriage in 1934 and when registering his death in 1982, I know him being born in 1908 was a different time but as the years have gone on I'm trying to figure out how he got by without one if this was true. It's confusing me to no end and hopefully someone may be able to help me with this?

Thank You

Best

Family History Beginners Board / Looking for Mary Jane Gray (Was Hall) & Family
« on: Sunday 10 February 19 18:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I am new to this forum so if I post something wrong or too much information I can censor it or just delete it and i'll start again, haha.

Over the last year I have been searching via ancestry (and badgering family) on information of Mary Jane Gray (Was Hall) and a few of her family members. I've hit a brick wall and hoping someone here will have some knowledge.
Mary was my great grandmother and born to Edward Wales Hall and Ruth Newman in Durham in 1900.
She married my great grandfather Thomas Gray in Durham in 1918 and had three children, Robert, Emily (who preferred Pem) and Thomas who was my grandfather and sadly passed before I was born.

Information that I am looking for concerns Mary as well as a few members of the family so I'll try to be as concise as I can.  :)

I know that Mary & Thomas divorced as he remarried later on in life but I can't find anything of Mary since 1932 when she gave birth to my grandfather Thomas. I'd love to know if she remarried or had anymore children.
I'm looking to see what happened to her son Robert (born 1920). I found him living with his Grandparents (Mary's Parents) on the 1939 census but know nothing more passed that.
I'm also wondering what happened to Mary's sisters who were Margaret Ann Hall & Emily Hall. I found them through Military records but never been able to find a 1911 Census of them or the family.

If anyone here knows anything I'd be so happy if you could reply and if I do find family here and it's not too much trouble, I've never seen a photo of any of them and if you have one I'd love to have a digital copy.

Thank you so much
