Lancashire / Re: MELLODEW in Lancashire
« on: Tuesday 19 November 19 04:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Alice,

According to SurnameDB, MELLOWDEW, MELLADEW, MERRIDEW etc. are variations of a Welsh surname.

Wales is not so far away from Lancashire.

BTW, now that I've had a chance to absorb the relevant parts of Jan KINGSHOTT's tree and comments, I have found a marriage record for John KINGSGATE and Mary ROBINSON in 1819 in Empshott, close to Greatham.

Jan Kingshott considers KINGSGATE to be a rare, but possible variation of KINGSHOTT.

As yet I only have the transcript and have not seen the original record.

I'm thinking that Mary ROBINSON is the woman who emigrated to Tasmania to join her convict husband. That Mary died in 1839 aged 37 so was born in 1802, as was Mary ROBINSON of Empshott.

Thanks, although this does not have William's birth.

Anyhow, I have now found another family history site that shows that there were indeed three marriages, and it is the mystery marriage that I need, not Mary SMALL's, which removes the issue of William's baptism.

All sorted.

Which tree on what platform?

Yes I have looked at other people's trees, but for someone to be displaying that image is a breach of copyright.

My original request was only to determine the actual year William KINGSHOTT was baptised.

This being a "lookup" forum, I assumed that was the general idea.

I can find online records myself, having both a FindMyPast and an Ancestry subscription, so the "lookup" I am requesting is for someone to tell me if the actual record is for 1821 or 1820.

Not asking for an image. I just want confirmation of exactly which year it was.

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Re: William KINGSHOTT baptised about 1820 in Greatham

That's what I'm saying.

The passenger records show that Mary nee SMALL and five children followed John KINGSHOTT to Tasmania after he was convicted.

All I want is for someone who has seen the originals to confirm that John KINGSHOTT and Mary SMALL were indeed married in 1821, and to confirm what year their son William was born.

I have everything else - I would just like to have those two years confirmed.

I have already looked carefully at all the children born to a John and Mary KINGSHOTT in that area over that period.

There seems to be three families, although I can only find two marriages.

The couple married in 1821 is the one I am investigating.

The family emigrated in 1835, and I identified the children by the passenger records.

The children born in Greatham are the ones who ended up in Tasmania, including William.

I don't live in the UK so can't go in to view the original records myself.
I was hoping someone local to Hampshire might be able to.

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / William KINGSHOTT baptised about 1820 in Greatham

Can someone please confirm the year of William's baptism?

The transcript says he was baptised on 26 Mar 1820 as William son of John and Mary KINSHOT, in Greatham, Hampshire.

This was a full 9 months before they married, so he would have been more likely baptised with his mother's surname, SMALL.

Sometimes the original recordist has absentmindedly written the previous year's date at the top of the page, which would make the transcript technically correct, but illogical.

If his baptism year was 1821, then his mother was 6 months pregnant when she married, which makes more sense.

Can someone please clarify this?

Thanks :)

The Common Room / Re: Vitebergensis

Yes, my original source is in German, and my daughter and I have been slowly translating it.

I've just noticed that one of the entries for this individual translates as
"matriculated University of Wittenburg 22 II 1519 as a law student".

That happens to be the date in the record.

Unfortunately the original has a footnote indicator just after the estimated year of birth, and doesn't mention the university till a couple of lines later.

This is why I've been struggling to understand the reference in terms of baptisms.

If the footnote marker had been after the university reference, all might have been a little clearer.

Thanks all.

The Common Room / Vitebergensis

Does anyone happen to know what Vitebergensis means?

I'm guessing it's Latin, but cannot find any kind of dictionary or reference that will hazard a definition.

The book's full title is "Album Academiæ Vitebergensis".

It seems to be a book of births and baptisms. Would any other kinds of record be included?

Here's where I found it:
