I get it Heywood, evidence is everything, I'm not that enamoured with Ancestry, it hints at things and provides evidence to support its hints, I'm getting better at finding said evidence but i still pay too much attention to what Ancestry tells me.
And your right, my search for Edward should lead me to his wife and Johns mother so I'll back track a little bit and see where that gets me.
Thanks for your help, I'll keep you posted.

So, age 24, Patrick was in Ireland in 1867 getting married, 4 years later age 28 he was in Millom, John is listed as age 21 in the 1871 census so born in 1850, the John Rogan Ancestry gave me is therefore NOT my John Rogan.

Ancestry auto-filled it in and also gave me a birth record for A John Rogan with a mother Rose, given that Edward is the father of Patrick and that john actually stood witness at the marriage, I would suggest Michael is the father of ANOTHER John Rogan and I now have to find MY John Rogan's mother.

If Patrick and John are brothers, Patricks marriage to Catherine shows his father as Edward and not Michael

I have a great grandmother, born in the UK but with Irish parents, namely her father who was born in Down but Ancestry keeps giving me conflicting information about this guy.
My great grandmother is Cecilia Veronica Rogan, born 15th October 1892 in Cockermouth, Cumberland, England to John Rogan and Bridget Carton........ I think  ::)
John was born 21st April 1852 in Down, Bridget was born 1st December 1850 in Glendalough, Wicklow.
The only evidence I have for these two is what Ancestry produced and I've found in the past its not always that reliable.
At some point in time John and Bridget came to England and maybe to Scotland first, and here is where evidence starts to conflict.
I have an1881 census showing John and Bridget in Cumberland, with 3 children, I also have a couple of the same name in the 1881 census in Edinburgh, I'm assuming the only coincidence is there names as I'm also assuming the Cumberland couple are my relatives, given the fact Cecilia was born here in 1892.
To further complicate the matter I have Johns parents listed as a Michael Rogan born 3rd February 1822 and Mary Ann Lyun born 1825 in Seavaghan, these 2 could be the parents of the John Rogan in Scotland though.
Both Michael and Mary Ann have at some point emigrated to the USA as they both have deaths listed in Philadelphia.
So confusion reigns, you can see why I'm struggling to make sense of all this and any help this forum can give in sorting it would be gratefully appreciated.

I read that as MASON  ::)
So, not an employee..............he's a patient  :o
I think what makes it all the more shocking is he lived with that condition another 9 years, he died in 1930.

GOT HIM!!!!!............well kind of, he's in Carlisle on a census with 25 other blokes, its page 2 of the census and page one isn't included for some reason.
Job descriptions range from joiners, gardeners, masons, he's the only one with a medical profession, a hospital maybe??
I'm assuming he's not estranged from Cecilia, its 30 miles away so he could either be commuting daily or staying over in the week.

Also, whilst the census lists there place of birth, it is not clear from the document where the census itself actually took place, no address, no town, nothing to identify where it is.
