The Common Room / Another annoying new Ancestry feature - Notifications
« on: Friday 16 September 22 16:09 BST (UK)  »
For those who use Ancestry for their trees - a new 'feature' has been added to the top right of your screen - Notifications!  If you haven't looked at it, it lights up red (why not green?) when something is added.  The additions are, for the most part, completely useless IMHO.

For instance: "we may have found a mother/father for XX"; "You shared a picture from 'user', what else might 'user' be able to share? Message 'user'"; etc., etc.,

They asked for Feedback LOL...  I told them to get rid of it pronto and fix the useless messaging system instead!

Cheers

The Common Room / Re: Ancestry trees on the blink?

And I thought it was my PC acting up!  The Ignore button has not been working properly for me over  here in the Great White North either.  I also use Chrome.  Glad to know it's not just me :)

The Lighter Side / Re: WDYTYA New Series

I only recognize Sue Perkins.
We don’t get the show here, unfortunately.

You can find current (and some past) episodes on YouTube.  The only annoying thing is that they are all broken up into about 5-10 minute segments, but they are there.

The Common Room / Re: Ancestry 'New Home Page'
« on: Thursday 09 June 22 15:41 BST (UK)  »
I use Ancestry.ca and am definitely not a fan of the 'new home page' either.  There was a brief option to view a new Beta version of the home page and then a couple of days later it's a done deal.

The Common Room / Re: Ancestry messenger email test
« on: Monday 18 April 22 15:42 BST (UK)  »
I am on Ancestry.ca and I concur - no emails received letting me know someone has messaged me on Ancestry.  I would have to scroll back to find the last one, but it's been a while.  Last week every reply I did send was going through twice!  I actually had to delete one instance of 3 different responses.  So annoying to both sender and recipient.

I really long for the old system too whereby you could group messages together, and even delete ones where there was no longer a reason to keep them.  Ah well, 1st world problems I guess :) but still a nuisance.

The Common Room / Re: Shocking behaviour on Ancestry

"I have also been going thru my tree systematically taking out precise birth/death/marriage dates where I personally have no source document, but have been guilty of simply taking another member's word for it."

I think that as long as you are already in possession of baptism and burial data that doesn't contradict the birth and death dates you later see, they're probably safe to accept. At least, for UK ancestors, any birth and death dates from 1837 onwards are likely to have been taken from the official certificates - sure I'm not alone in adding this info to people in my tree without bothering to upload the cert as supporting evidence.

Let me clarify slightly, I am removing those precise dates where I have no source doc at all except the other tree.  If I have a birth/death/marriage registration that gives a month/year which is in line
with that precise date, then yes, I leave it.

Cheers,

About 3 years ago I was the recipient of one of 'those' emails - "you have made an error on your tree and here's why".  When I looked at the person in my tree, I had definitely made an error!  I had the same person as both wife of, and sister of, my supposed ancestor (1841 and 1851 Census docs)!

The person who sent the email was extremely helpful, because as my grandson would say, that whole line of my tree was now "sus"!  LOL  That error resulted in having to remove over 5,000 people!  It took ages, but finally I managed to clean it up.

Since then I have been much more careful to READ everything.  I have also been going thru my tree systematically taking out precise birth/death/marriage dates where I personally have no source document, but have been guilty of simply taking another member's word for it.

I'm also waiting on two replies where I have politely pointed out, with documented proof, that a particular person is incorrect on their tree.  To date, not a peep.  Ah well, 'twas ever thus!

Cheers,
Ms_C (on a very snowy day in Toronto)

(btw - @Gadget - thanks for telling me what FH is!  I did a bit of research and eventually decided on RootsMagic.)

The Common Room / Re: I hate the new layout of Ancestry trees that appeared just now.
« on: Saturday 19 February 22 21:29 GMT (UK)  »
I normally use the pedigree view and profiles pages. I've never really liked the way Ancestry does the trees and, like Andrew, I prefer FH.

The new look is very cramped on a laptop.

What is 'FH'?

Thanks

It might be best if they stopped messing about and get the shared matches sorted.

Hi.  What is the problem you're having with shared matches Gadget?

(Edit:  And yes, mine is back to the previous format too!)

Cheers (and Happy New Year)
