World War One / Re: Identity of Regt ?

I would say it is very similar in shape and outline to The Duke of Wellington's Regiment (West Riding).

They are wearing the cap badge of The Duke of Wellington's Regiment (West Riding).

However, and somewhat curiously, they are not wearing the Regiment's collar badges (these were Indian elephants). They seem to be wearing grenade collar badges suggesting Royal Artillery or Royal Engineers (I always confuse the two).

Good luck with your research.

I should have added, if your friend is happy to do so, cleaning up the hallmark (if necessary) so that it can be read will also help to narrow down the date awarded to a 'no earlier than' year.

See:

https://www.nam.ac.uk/explore/regimental-medals

Note in particular the part, "In 1830, the Army introduced the official Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, which is still presented today. Subsequently, regimental medals for good conduct and long service were rarely issued".

So, presumably issued by the Regiment itself, i.e. the 8th (King's) King's Regiment of Foot (according to Wikipedia, so-named from 1759-1881). So, presumably this was issued some time between 1759 and 1830.

Hope that is of some help.

If you look at the next page of the Service Record you posted, it states, "Compulsorily Transferred to RE. IH&D Sandwich 21/9/18".

I might have the 'IH&D' wrong but it seems that until 20/9/18 he was presumably still cap-badged to the KLR - especially if he was recovering in the UK from his injuries and so his cap-badge would have been less of an issue for anybody. So, if he was married in Sep 1918 (and before the 21st), I assume his uniform was still that of the KLR.

Given all his badges match in the second and third pictures and the close physical similarity, it seems to be the same person.

He clearly has a ring (wedding band ?) on the middle photo. And by the look of it in the wedding photo, though it is a bit hard to be certain. That suggests the photo with his parents was after his wedding.

Are they both the same person as in the first, again, there is a close physical similarity.

If not, who else could it be ? A sibling ? Otherwise, why would the family have the photos ?

As to the uniform date discrepancy, are the family certain of the date of the marriage ? Do they know the date he was wounded ? Those details might help confirm the date order of the photos.

Hope that's of some help.

Just a thought.

If he was in The Essex Yeomanry after WW1, the photo appears to show his having no medal ribbons, which seems incongruous. Unless he did not serve overseas during WW1, which could be a possibility. Does his Service Record show any medals awarded ?

Hi,

Not RAMC. If you google "R.A.M.C. shoulder flash" you will see it was white lettering on a maroon background. Your photo definitely is not white lettering.

Not R.A. either as you can tell you are seeing only half the flash so there must be a similar (2) letters out of camera shot. Hence why I thought it might be R.A.O.C.

As to War Office Controlled Units, I have no idea but I suspect a Google search will answer that.

Good luck with your research.

Hi,

1. The picture needs to be flipped horizontally - you can see the text on the shoulder flash is back to front. And his button holes are on the 'wrong' side.

2. The badge is described as that worn by 'War Office Controlled Units' - not very helpful to be honest: https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/30072786

3. The shoulder flash has "R. A" but the rest is missing. It looks like red text on a blue backing - that might help identify the rest of the detail but I can't remember what options that would include. Possibly "R.A.O.C." - Royal Army Ordnance Corps but I am happy to be corrected.

4. The uniform is khaki not blue - so Army, not RAF.

Hope that's of some help.

ATB.
