Is there any reference to a baptism of George Holden in 1858 or a burial or marriage after that date? Also is there any reference to a burial of a Thomas Holden post 1820?

That's my great great grandmother Elizabeth Holden there! She married Morris Edwin Gravett. I have her birth certificate but didn't know the dates of her baptism or Hannah's so thanks for that.

Are there any other Holdens listed either for Brighton or Cuckfield? I'm really trying to "kill off" some of the Holdens in that area as there are several with the same name making it hard to track who is mine.

Thanks again
Matt

Hi
Some of these are on the IGI, though I don't think Billingshurst is.   Do try there first (www.familysearch.org)Cuckfield has an "online parish clerk" who can look up burials for you - they won't be on the IGI.  It also has a couple of other churches as well as the C of E one - but later than you want on the whole.    Many of us have the Sussex Marriage Index which covers up to 1837 so if you give names they could be checked fairly quickly for marriages and will confirm what you find on the IGI.

Hi Andrea

Thanks for the reply. Billingshurst is on Familysearch as I have already used this a lot. However I am hoping someone will have access to the original registers or transcripts ofthem as some transcripts I have seen for Billingshurst have extra info on which is not on the IGI. Plus I want to verify some details about marriages and christenings found on the IGI by cross referencing them with the original registers.

I've visited the Cuckfield Online Parish Clerk site a lot but it doesn't seem to cover the dates I am interested in. However I might email them to see if they can help anyhow.

Thanks for letting me know about the Sussex Marriage Index. I will post a message about this soon.

Thanks for the update.
I will try and get my mind round it all, but its a bit early in the morning here so it may take a short while.

Remember dates of baptism and dates of birth can often be years apart.
By the way, have you tried to see if your George slipped through your net as a Holman rather than a Holden?

Re "the widow" Winefred Wells.
Looks as though you have cousins marrying here.
It would also seem that Winifred's parents were probably cousins as well.
That should throw most family tree computer programes into total confusion.

Will get back to you later

Roy G

Yep definately confusing. I'm sure the two Holden groups are related but as they are from different areas it is hard to work out how and find that link. Winifred Wells's Holden ancestors were from Cuckfield (and possibly Hurtspierpoint) while those of George Holden were almost certainly from the Brighton area.

I hadn't considered Holman as an alternative so thanks for that thought. I've tried practically all other variations - Holden, Holdan, Hulden, Huldan, Holdon, Halden (which is what the George born 1818 is down as on the 1851 census), Hilden, Holding, Holdin, even Holdun. I'll give holman a go today.

As you say birth and baptism dates can often be months or years apart, Daniel Wells (father of Winifred Wells) was born in 1793 but baptised as an adult in 1829 (he is actually recorded in the register as an adult baptism)! So i may have to check post 1817 for the baptism of George.

All the details of the 1814 George fit (i.e right father, right father's occupation, right area) so this could be mine, but then again he appears to be alive and married to a woman called Jane in 1861 when my George was clearly dead! So maybe that's not him.

I'm sure Stephen Holden and Jane Holden are cousins and I'm trying to working that out this morning. Maybe my George links in with their ancestors somehow.

Anyhow enough waffle from me. I need to go and draw a tree out so I can get my head around all these Holdens lol.

Thanks again

Matt

Update to previous posts:

I would be interested in any Holden marriage or burials in Brighton from 1805-1861.

Thanks for the info Roy. I atually already have these details and I am trying to work out if this is my George or not.

My George married Winifred Wells in 1852 but died before 1861. The only death we can find for a George Holden in the Brighton area between 1851-1861 is in 1859 in Lewes (there is one in 1852 but he had a daughter born in 1854 so that's not a likely candidate). According to the death certificate he was born in about 1817. I have now found what I think is him on the 1851 census which gives his year of birth as 1818 and place of birth as Brighton. He is working as a Bricklayer which is what he is described as on his marriage certificate and on the birth certificate of his daughter Elizabeth.

This is where it gets confusing though. On the marriage certificate he said his father was James Holden, a blacksmith. Well as you have seen there is no George Holden in the Brighton register born 1817 but the one in 1814 was born to a James Holden who was a blacksmith. Also this George had a sister named Hannah and my George named one of his children Hannah. Surely not a coincidence?

To make it more confusing my George Holden (died 18590 married Winifred Wells. Her mother was another Hannah Holden, and not only was her father a Holden but so was her mother (ie born a Holden). They certainly liked to marry people with similar names.

I had though that the 1814 George was mine but I've now found an entry on the 1861 census for a George Holden, born 1814 in Brighton married to a Jane. So if that's the one in the register he can't be mine. The entry in the 1851 census is almost certainly my George as the dates, place, and occupation all fit but there's no baptism for a George in 1817-1818.

Confusing or what.

Anyhow what I am really hoping to do is put some of these Holdens in family groups and try to "kill off" those which don't relate to me. I really need to cover the period 1815-1851 but don't know where to find the records (without resorting to a visit to the East Sussex Record Office).

Anyhow I won't bore you anymore but thanks again for checking those. At least I know I've not missed any.

Hi
I wrote the early history about how the Brighton Workhouses were established and you can read it on the "My Brighton and Hove" Website

http://www.workhouses.org.uk/index.html

Briefly I would like to point out that in the period that interests you (between 1850 - 1900 ) there were two workhouse locations.  The earlier one in Dyke Road Brighton opened circa 1822 and closed down in 1868.  Practically all the records for that establishment have been mislaid, some say deliberately because of a hint of mismanagement.

You should have better luck with the records for the other workhouse in Elm Grove (1868 - mid 20th century) and as already you have already been advised, all the records that have been deposited should be found in the PRO at Kew and East Sussex Record Office.

Hi Roy

Thank you for your relpy. I have already visited your website which is actually where I first foudn one of my family in the workhouse.  I am hoping to make a visit to the National Archives in the next few weeks or to the ESRO so hopefully I can find out more info then.
