Sussex Lookup Requests / Re: 1891 and 1901 census
« on: Friday 18 August 06 14:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi Cyberacct

Thanks for that. These are the people I am trying to locate:

1891
Frank Gravett aged about 33

In 1881 he was living at 16 London Road, Worthing with his wife Esther and their daughter Ruth. His occupation was given as Stonemason and his birthplace is down as Newdigate, Surrey.

on the 1891 census the family is living at 8 London Road, Worthing with Esther listed as the Head of the family. Esther is described as being married rather than widowed. On the 1901 census the family is still at 8 London Road but Frank is back listed as the Head. So where is he in 1891? Hope you can find him.

1901
Peter Gravett  aged 56

In 1891 he was living at 62 Orme Road with his wife Ellen and their children. Peter worked as a Brewer and died in 1920, however I can't find him or his family in 1901.

Frank Gravett - aged about 24. Born Worthing.
He is the son of the above Peter and was living with his parents in 1891. He died in 1908.

George Gravett aged aboutt 29 - Born Worthing.
In 1891 he was living at The Jolly Brewers (39 Clifton Road) with his stepmother Jane Gravett, his brothers Matthew and Peter, and stepsiblings Percy Ayling, Lyida Ayling and Charles Ayling. He married Florence Alice Ayling in 1892 and died in April 1925. According to his Will he was a Turf Commission Agent.

I have a few others but I'll let you try those first.

Many thanks for the help

Matt

Is there someone who would be willing and able to do a search on the 1891 and 1901 census for two people who seemed to have vanished?

Thanks

Sussex / Broadwater Cemetery, Worthing

Is there anyone who lives in Worthing who would be able to visit the above cemetery and photograph some family graves for me? I was there yesterday but didn't have time to find all the graves I went to look for. I have the grave reference numbers and a plan of the cemetery as well as dates of death for the people I'm after. Any help welcomed.

I checked the 1841 and it's Dyke, not Hall.
Meliora may have got mixed up with another lookup she as posting.

Just looking at my notes on this family and the Murrays I have spotted a possible problem. The1851 census for the Dyke family in Stepney gives the children's place of birth as Stepney

11 Swan Court, Mile End

James Dyke - Head - Widow - 50 - Carpenter - Weston Bamfylde, Somerset
Georgeina Dyke - Wife - 20 - STEPNEY, Middlesex
Henrietta  Dyke - Dau - 17 - STEPNEY, Middlesex
Frederick Dyke - Son - 12 - STEPNEY, Middlesex

HO 107 1553
St Peters, Tower Hamlets

That's exactly how the census entry reads. I've put Georgina as "wife" although we've now established she was James' daughter and this was an error.

So any why the change of birth place? Also I found the christening for a Georgina Lura Dyke daughter of James and Martha in 1829 on the IGI, but she was born in Westminster!

This gets more confusing lol.

Ahh thanks Darcy that's great. At least that adds one more generation onto the Dyke tree. Now if only I could find James' christening or find him in the 1871 census. I haven'tfound his death yet.

Thanks again

Yep I have that 1861 census as well and think this is the right James.

Can anyone tell me where in Somerset this is as I've never heard of it. Also does anyone have access to PRs for this parish for the late 18th and early 19th century and if so would someone mind doing a search for James Dyke born c1801? Any other references to the name Dyke and possible relations would be great as well.

Thanks
Matt

Hi again

I assume these Halls are not linked to the Dykes, correct?
