The 1939 register was taken on 29th September and according to this http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/british/britain_wwtwo/ff1_conscription.shtml
registration started a little later so  his being a shop assistant certainly would not necessarily exclude your grandfather Stones serving later

My daughter put a post on an IOW Facebook page and it’s been suggested that it’s Wheeler’s Bay, apparently used for unloading provisions, particularly coal, onto the beach. There is a picture which looks similar. Sorry, another huge picture.

hi Carol. No, it’s bigger than that, a framed print. My daughter said she’ll carefully try to open it when she gets home and see if there’s anything on the back.

Hello everyone,

Not sure if I should put this here or the Hampshire board so please feel free to move It if that’s best.

My daughter, who worked on the IOW for a couple of years is back there on holiday and bought this great picture in a charity shop. She can’t place it and we’re not sure of it’s period although I’m guessing 1870s.

If anyone knows more we’d be glad to hear it,

I’ve written to his granddaughters and suggested that. I’m 4 months in to the wait for my dad’s records and I suspect it might be several more yet!
