The Common Room / Re: Joseph Gaunt born 1792

I have an account of their journey to Canada in 1850 which was documented by someone who descends from the family in Canada & all the names match with the 1841 census in Stretton on Fosse, Warwickshire.

Thank you for that. Yes, that is my Joseph but it is his parents who I’m uncertain about.
There is quite an interesting story about Joseph & Susannah. In 1850 they sailed from Liverpool to Canada & walked over 400Kms to a plot of land given to settlers. It was covered with trees which they cleared & then farmed. When they did the walk, the youngest boy was just 7 & they carried all their belongings with them.

I saw the information in several places eg. Ancestry & Family Search, Geni.com. I know the dates are right because I also have details of his journey to Canada in 1850 with his wife & 5 sons. Joseph was blind & his job in England was a log tapper.

I’m looking for information on my great, great, great grandfather Joseph Gaunt, born in Staffordshire, married Susannah Long in Stretton on Fosse Warwickshire. Joseph was blind & he & Susannah & his 5 children went to Wawanosh, Huron County Canada. I’d like to be able to prove who Joseph’s parents were.

My great aunt was a foster carer in Sussex in the 1930’s. Is there any way of finding out who she actually fostered?

Cavan / Re: Nixon family, Nixon Lodge & Nixon House in County Cavan

Thank you both for the links & newspaper cutting. Interesting.
I know that “my” Thomas Nixon died in 1870 so they are probably not from the same branch of the family.

Cavan / Nixon family, Nixon Lodge & Nixon House in County Cavan

i am a descendant of Thomas Nixon born abt 1792 & his wife Isabella Reed born abt 1804. They lived in Tawnymakelly in County Cavan & I believe he owned land & paid tithes on it. I know that both Thomas & Isabella died in Ottawa Canada but I have no idea when they emigrated but it must have been after 1836 because he is still paying tithes in that year. I believe they lived in Nixon Lodge & I think there are ruins of it still on site. Does anyone know anything about Nixon Lodge or have any photos or drawings of how it used to look or how what’s left of it looks now?
Any information on the Nixons of that time will be gratefully received.

The Common Room / Re: Frederick Coomber

I am aware of the pitfalls of inferring more in hope than in anger but in this case I have the supporting evidence contained within my grandmother’s birthday book. Why would she put the details of a person in there just because she had the same surname as her sister-in-law? Seems unlikely that she wasn’t a relative. Pamela could have been Frederick’s sister but there is such a large age difference that it seems unlikely.

I am related. My grandfather was Maud’s, Pamela’s mother, brother so I suppose that makes Pamela my second cousin. I’ve only recently had my DNA checked but none of the links came up to my grandfather’s family, only to my grandmother, father & paternal grandmother.
