Morning, Mabel,
WOW.
No mention of his wife, who would have been pregnant, and children in the report, who must have been traumatised by it all.
I wonder if the Edward Jones involved was related to the victim's wife, Ann Jones, assuming it is the same John Gunter.

Hi,
If John was born very early in 1820, this may be relevant, though bear in mind John is a very common name. FS has the Death of a John Gunter in Llanvihangel, Monmouth, 28 May 1819. Llanvihangel in the parish of Crucorney is 6 miles from Llanwenarth. His age is given as 49, giving an approximate dob as 1770.
There is also the Christening of a John Gunter in Llanellen, Monmouth on 20 December, 1765 (possibly a bit early). Llanellen is 5 miles from Llanwenarth.
Also a Marriage of John Gunter to Ann Jones in Llanvihangel 10 May 1800.
They be three different people, and none of them related to your John, but perhaps some starting places.

His Father?

I did say the Unknown Death was a stretch.
I was thinking of him being on leave in Portsea, dying suddenly with no personal identity on him, only regimental, returned to his unit, identified and buried there.

Hello Phantomfixer,
Am I right in thinking his family were in Portsea?
I know this is a long stretch but I found these GRO entries:

Death Q1/1868 Portsea Island
Unknown age not known (page 276)

Death Q1/1869 Portsea Island
Unknown age not known (page 286)

Good Morning,
After trying all the different spellings of his name I could think of, and looking into his family background, for inspiration, I can't find him either.
Thoughts I've had are;
who would be responsible for registering the death, family or the army?
would his death have been registered locally or through regimental headquarters?
 has the Registration Area changed?
The other people on the page don't appear to have had their deaths registered in Aldershot either.
Stefan
PS The Registration Districts have changed. Also, where did he die?

Hi,
apparently there were two ferries in the area. One at the end of Fen/Ferry Lane and the other at the Pyewipe Inn.

Thanks again, Daisy.
I know Mary Ann didn't go to the States. Her husband George Brewitt died, but I have found her and her sons Jesse and Walter with her new husband, James Hitchings, in Coventry in 1861.
I'm not sure about Thomas. I have a Thomas marrying his wife Hannah Hall in Coventry in 1863, but then nothing. I also have a Thomas from England in New York and later Minnesota with his wife Lucy. When in NY he says he has been resident there since 1861.
