Hi Heyesie,

The family were in Rose Street Woolton in 1897 and King Street Garston by 1901, later moving to Stanley Street.

I think the big house was more to do with someone supporting the family in some way, probably financially but I am not sure and no-one will talk about it.  My imagination leads to all sorts of things but I think I shall have to put it out of my mind as one of those things I will not be able to find out.  I have several birth certificates with no fathers which leads me to think it may be connected with that and they are all in Woolton.  Perhaps I need to visit the LRO and look at the church records to see if they give any clue.

Thanks for your help.

Hi

It is lovely hearing all about Moreton.  Celia, I imagine your 'Boglands' estate must have been the one with Eastway school in it as that must be quite low lying land.  I got to know Moreton really well delivering newspapers!  Life must have been very difficult in the tents.

I found some really interesting websites while browsing yesterday:

http://www.kenrowe.net/WirralandLiverpool/Moreton.htm

http://www.yew-tree.org.uk/wirral_a_brief_history.html

http://www.mikekemble.com/mside/hovercraft.html

and if anyone remembers the ladybirds - part 4 about 60% into the video

http://www.wikiwirral.co.uk/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=169019#Post169019

I didn't imagine there was any film still remaining of it.  I was at Hoylake Baths and the water became covered in them.

Thanks everyone for all your help.

Hello Eccy,

I am sitting here with a big smile on my face,  ;D this forum is amazing how people come up with answers to the most obscure queries.  The coincidence of someone reading my post that has a relation in the house is incredible. Thank you so much.

Your information is brilliant and whilst I don't know why they were in Moreton at least it explains why he was born there, and obviously with expert care.  I am intrigued now, they must have stayed with her or nearby, the birth wasn't registered for nearly a month but I suppose they could have gone back to register him.  I will take the father's tree back further now, just to check he is not related to them in any way.  Just awaiting the marriage certificate, hopefully it will be here by the end of the week.

I remember the description of shanty town and I imagine the building of the sea wall would have made quite a difference to the area.  I am going to try and find out when this was built as it might explain why so many houses were built between the two wars.  The whole area along Hoylake Road and Upton Road appeared in that time.

Family History is amazing as I learn so much more than who is in my tree and love going off at tangents to investigate things like this.

Thanks ever so much for your help, will be smiling all day. :)

Km, on re-reading this thread I realised I didn't explain why the two places, the family moved from Woolton to Garston at about this time.  So it could be in either place.

Sorry. :-[

Thanks.

Hi Andy,

What a difference in those two maps.  I am going to try and find out when the sea wall was built as that might explain all the building once the land was better protected from flooding.

So 'The Laurels' would have been quite a new building in 1925, interesting.

Thanks for your links, I have spent quite a long time looking at the maps, takes me back to my childhood and all the places I knew...

Thanks

Thank you both so much for your replies.

This is a bit of a puzzle now.  I was puzzled enough just wondering why he was born there, and now it is more of a puzzle.

I just checked the certificate and the registration district is Wirral, sub-district Woodchurch in the County of Chester.  Would this help on where Moreton was before Celia?  I never imagined it wasn’t part of Wallasey.

I know Bermuda Road is at the top end of Moreton near to Saughall Massie and I remember it as a road with lots of different types of house built at different time – it is more than 30 years since I was there!

I will have another look at the 1901 census as that is all I have to look at, this time in Moreton cum Saughall as I was looking in Moreton cum Lingham before, but a lot of houses could have been built in those 20 odd years.

What is a shame is that my Dad had a collection of photos of Old Moreton, but when he moved away he passed them on to someone else and I don’t know who.  They would be interesting to people now I am sure.  If only I could look at them……

As far as I know there were no relations living on this side of the Mersey until the 1960s which makes it more intriguing as to why his mother gave birth there.

Thanks for your help.

Hi

Thank you both for your replies.

Pegasuss, I remember when I was young living on the Wirral and our local pub was called the Big House so I had thought about this, but this 'Big House' was spoken of in hushed tones and I suspect someone from there, wherever it is, had caused a problem in the family.  This is all I know and it is puzzling me.

Thanks km, I have been looking at the halls around, I just thought it was worth posting in case it is a phrase that is well known in the area and someone would say "oh yes it is......".  I suppose it is what we all hope with our brick walls!

Thanks ever so much for your help.

Hello,

I have a mention of 'The Big House' as a place in Garston or Woolton in around 1900 and just wondered if anyone might know where it was.  It may have just been a family nickname for a house of course in which case I will never know.  :(  I just thought I would try asking as you never know....

Here's hoping....

Thanks

Hello,

I don't know if anyone can help me on this, I have a birth certificate for someone born at 'The Laurels, Bermuda Road, Moreton'.  I just wondered if anyone knew this place.  The parents give their address as Garston, Liverpool so I was wondering if it was some sort of maternity home perhaps?  It seems strange that he was born so far away.

Thanks

Daff
