Technical Help / Re: Help with “C drive full” issue, please
« on: Friday 05 April 24 23:57 BST (UK)  »
I'm only on an android tablet at the moment so I can't give you specific details but I once experienced unexpectedly having a very full drive and it was because I was creating a sequential backup and every day a lot of the whole disc was being backed up to another part of it so I suggest until you get any better suggestions try examining your backup settings.

Have you tried the NLS maps? I'd do it for you but my current screen is too small.

Graveyards and Gravestones / Re: Latin tomb inscription

Google translate, A knight Robert named Manfelde is founded here,
The shining court of Henry the fifth time,
He undertook various labors for the king,
While he subdued the Gauls and the Normans during the wars,
Armiger and the fourth H. for the protection of the sixth,
He stood by the chosen one while death drew in the funeral.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / DNA in the current EastEnders story.
« on: Wednesday 13 March 24 15:45 GMT (UK)  »
I make no apologies for lowering the tone of this section of the forum but I am a bit bemused by what is going on in EastEnders at the moment. Th3 new landlord of the Queen Victoria public house, George Knight, clearly believes that he is of Caribbean ethnicity. In an attempt to trace his long-lost mother he has a DNA test, gets the results back in extremely quick time and very quickly learns to understand everything that he is told much quicker than the rest of us ever did. He then announces to his family that he has discovered that he is not of Caribbean ethnicity but Ghanaian.  Anyone serious about researching their ethnicity through DNA is well aware that it is largely apocryphal as the results are based on as much as the last 500 years. The current plot line has as much research as the average teenager on YouTube who got a DNA test kit for Christmas and has just found out that they aren't the same ethnicity as their grandparents.

I make no apologies for lowering the tone.

The usually reliable https://www.isitdownrightnow.com/ancestry.co.uk.html
says:

Ancestry.co.uk is UP and reachable by us.

But it's down for me.

The Lighter Side / Re: Marrying your dead wife’s sister
« on: Thursday 29 February 24 17:29 GMT (UK)  »
I had one like this.  It was a longtime mystery.  The ages of a wife on the various censuses were inconsistent, she was initially known as Mary Ann, but later Maria, and Maria on her grave.  This was duplicated on many Ancestry trees, until I eventually found that Mary Ann had died, the widowed husband had then married Mary Ann's kid sister, Maria.  I got the various certificates and I wrote to all the 'wrong' trees on ancestry, got no replies, and nothing has been changed.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Ancesry now enforcing 2 step verification!
« on: Thursday 18 January 24 16:38 GMT (UK)  »
I use MyHeritage & Ancestry on several devices.  This works for me, as follows, I set up a RULE in my email program to forward messages that contain verification codes from Ancestry  (subject contains verification code) & MyHeritage (subject contains Two-Factor Authentication) to the device I use most.

It takes a few extra seconds for the message to arrive but it saves going upstairs or back home.  The only downside is that I have to delete the message on 2 devices.

I tried disabling 2-factor, but it required me to re-enable it to look at DNA matches.
