I understand that some years records aren't available online via the General Register Office - births from 1937 to 84 and deaths from 1957 to 84.
Does anyone know why this is the case and when the GRO might publish these?

Many thanks for your kind offer. I have typed up the record as a table in a Word document which more or less replicates your work. I'll have to see if I can find time as you suggest but what with bird watching, allotment, ongoing family research, jobs around the house...

The question of having a number of jobs struck a chord with me as this came up in the story of my great great grandfather, Enoch Taylor, from Yorkshire.
In the 1841 and 1851 censuses he was said to be a Fancy Weaver, then in 1861 he is a Coal Miner. At first this bothered me and I thought I had the wrong Enoch as the jobs were so different. BUT, he died as a consequence of a mining fire in 1860 and, in the Coroner's Report, his widow told the coroner that he had not only been a Fancy Weaver and a Banksman (a coal mining occupation), he was also an Innkeeper. He was actually living in the George Inn in Upper Denby at the time of his death. So, at least 3 occupations - no such thing as job security back then.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I am particularly impressed with Chiddicks work but I'm not sure I can put in enough time to achieve a similar, remarkable, result. I will certainly "pinch" the Individual Family Record Sheet though.

Thank you all very much indeed for your help with this. In the 1851 census you can see why the transcriber read the name as Barlow instead of Barton (not the first time I've hit a brick wall in this way). I've searched Findmypast and Ancestry for army records for Robert Stewart but not found anything so I'm going to contact the regiments and see what they know.

If I have this right, one of my GG grandparents, Henrietta Stewart, married a John Barton in 1847.
In the 1861 census (I can't locate one for 1851), it states her place of birth was Isle of France (now Mauritius); then the 1871 census says she was born in the East Indies. Both very exotic but does anyone have any thoughts how this apparent confusion would arise. Her father had been a Sergeant Major in the 29th (Worcestershire) Regiment of Foot so may have been posted overseas.

Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way/format to write up a family history. I am using Word and will have about 50 pages of plain text. I was going to paste, in the appendices, copies of certificates, census records etc but it was becoming unwieldy, so, with my PC copy, I have inserted hyperlinks to every document I hold. I can't think of an easy way to send all of that out to everyone so I will be circulating a copy without hyperlinks, just a typed up record.
The problem I am wrestling with is how best to make the narrative flow. At its simplest, I have divided the document into the two current families and in each section have gone backwards, listing parents, grandparents etc, with all relevant dates and special events included.
This has given all the details but not, I think, in an easily understood way. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

I am a bit late to the discussion but have only just found a a forebear's birth certificate on which her father is described as a Stone Delver and this prompted my search. His occupation is confirmed further in the parish christening record as Quarryman.
With regard to changing occupations, two of my forebears in the Denby area around the middle 1800's appear to have moved from Weaving to Mining, presumably because employment back then was so precarious.
