I think I am right in saying  a death for Charles (b c.1822) has not been found.

The  death you have given in reply #15, would be for the son, b 1862.

Sue
Indeed I am referring to the son in that post. He has his own thread somewhere on this site.
Charles Jnr. was married five times and had ten children from four of the five. I worry that he may take after his father in that respect.

Not mother of the head certainly - probably just means mother of the child in the house

Annie Elizabeth marries a James Howard in December 1881 at St Giles in the Field, Holborn

I had seen that marriage entry before, though exactly what happened to the couple afterwards I haven't yet found. I couldn't find them on any census, though I will double check.

1871? Marlybone/Somerstown

John Nano    47    - head. INdian cook, b Calcutta
Mary Nano   38    - b Brighton, dmestic servant
Emily Greenewald    35     - widow, general servant, b Stepney
Jolana Greenewald    5      b  St Lukes  [Johana?]
I actually don't believe that Emily was actually a widow at this time, since the only crew records which might mention Charles that I could find were after this date, though back then I think a "widow" could sometimes have been abandoned, rather than had their husband die.

What death details do you have for Charles GREENWOOD  and Dorothy KINDLEY....when?...where?

Do you an age for this Charles GREENWOOD?
Dorothy died in Adelaide in 1890 aged 62. Charles GREENWOOD died Hobart in 1950 aged 88.

There's a probate entry for an Emily Greenwald died 11 Feb 1874 widow and sole executor was Patrick Hennessey 120 Drury Lane - same address as on the census above.

Not finding the death registration entry yet to see how old she was unless it's the Emily Greenwood age 39 registered Mar 1874 Pancras.

Both GRO and Free BMD have entry as Greenwood - what do you think?

Her death may well have been registered as Greenwood. I know that his son, Charles, from his other "wife" in Australia changed his name to Greenwood.

There are also 2 births in Loudoun with the same parents as Catharine, Duncan 1804 & Janet, 1806.

There is also an Alexander, 1793, Abbey, Mary, 1795, Abbey,  Duncan, 1799 Paisley & a Gabriel, 1802, Mearns.

Using fuzzy matching in the search for Renfrewshire & Ayrshire

Yes I have seen all of these. So far The siblings whose later lives I am aware of are Mary, mentioned in my previous post, and Alexander, who married Elizabeth Walker and had a few children in Glasgow, and one much later in the Isle of Barra, and probably more. Alexander was dead by his son Duncan's wedding in 1857, so probably dead c.1856.

I have only found two of the children on any census so far.
Mary M and Johanna Greenwald were living with Mary and Violet Hennessy, though their relationship to Mary A Hennessy is "ward", which I have never seen on a census before.
Johanna was later married to Amos Baldry, and appears as with her family in later census records.

Marriage

September qtr 1855
Charles Greanold / Emily Palmer. Whitechapel 1c 697

I found the parish record for this marriage. Charles's father is Peter, a house carpenter and Emily's father is William, a master gardener.

Do you an age for this Charles GREENWOOD?

Dorothy Kindley was born 1828 in Penzance, the daughter of Ralph Sheldon Kindley and Dorothy Childs.

Charles Greenwald was born c.1822 according to the marriage record to Emily Palmer, whilst the Charles Greenwald aboard the Conference was born c1837, and c1841 on the Tarpeian.

I was hoping someone could help me track down a "problem" ancestor.
My 3rd great-grandfather, Charles Greenwood, was born Charles William Grenwald, 1862 in Adelaide, South Australia, to Charles Grenwald, ship's carpenter.
Charles had three known children in Adelaide, all to Dorothy Kindley:
  • Charles, b. 1862 Queenstown, d. 1950 Hobart, Tasmania
  • John Ernest, b. 1867 Alberton, d. 1934 Northfield, SA
  • Agnes 1871-1872

The problem however is the following: I have identified five children born to a Charles Greenwald, ship's carpenter in Shoreditch, to Emily Palmer.
  • Mary Matilda Greenwald, b. 1856
  • Ann Elizabeth Greanwald, b. 1858
  • Isabella Grenwald, b. 1859
  • William Frederick Greenwald, b. 1864
  • Johanna Greenwald, b. 1866
On some of the London births, Charles is called "Charles Gotthart Greenwald".

I find it rather unlikely that there were multiple Charles Greenwalds employed as ship's carpenters at the time, and the gaps between the births of the children could perhaps suggest that he was travelling back and forth between London and Adelaide. I have found only a handful of records potentially pertaining to Charles:
  • Findmypast: C Grunwald, b. 1837 Germany, Carpenter aboard the "Conference" 1875.
  • Ancestry: Charles Greenwald, aged 36, born "Lubec", ship last served "Tarpeian", joined ship 18 Jul 1877 as s/d+cook, deserted 31 Oct 1877 in Galveston

It appears that "Charles Greanold" was maried in Q3 1855 to Emily Palmer in Whitechapel.
Just found a parish record for the marriage, which records his father's name as Peter Greanold, house carpenter.

Does anyone have any leads for tracking down seamen? I have scoured Ancestry and FindMyPast, but turned up very little.

Cheers for now,
Oliver.
