Family History Beginners Board / Re: Absent Father - Best Search Protocol?
« on: Sunday 22 August 21 18:57 BST (UK)  »
Be prepared for the possibility that no father's name will be on there.

When you looked for the father in the 1939 did you put in the occupation that appeared on the bastardy order?
Yes, we did, and found one name that matched. Now we need additional confirmation this might be something to follow up.
You are right that the father's name will probably not be on the birth entry, but we won't know for a for a few more days yet. We have the FIL's marriage entry and his father's name/occupation is blank.

Thanks for your advice.

Have you checked newspapers around the time of the bastardy court order - perhaps it might have been reported in the local press?

No, but we'll do this now. Thank you.

Thankyou BumbleB.  Yes we've tried that, but we have such limited information - not even a year of birth, just guessed at an age range.

Family History Beginners Board / Absent Father - Best Search Protocol?
« on: Sunday 22 August 21 15:42 BST (UK)  »
We're looking for advice on suggested search protocols to help us to discover more information on my husband's grandfather.

My father-in-law never knew his biological father as he deserted his mother either before he was born, or shortly after. All we have to go on is a 1929 bastardy court order for maintenance. This has the absent man's name, his profession, and an address where the court order was served, which we believe was the address of his place of work. If the absent father was about the same age as the mother, then this gives his birth year range as 1900 - 1910. Realistically this means he's not going to be on the 1911 census with a name/profession. We're hoping he'll appear on the 1921 census, but that won't be out for a while yet.

We have my father-in-law's short form birth certificate, and have applied to GRO for a copy of his entry of birth. We're hoping this might give us more information on the absent father; perhaps to confirm his occupation and the spelling of his family name.

Other than the above, we're not sure where to go or what to do next. Some advice, please?

Family History Beginners Board / 1930s Child Maintenance Orders - archives
« on: Sunday 14 March 21 19:11 GMT (UK)  »
Could anyone advise me where I might be able to find details of a Child Maintenance Order around 1929 to 1939. I believe it would have been dealt with by a Manchester Court.  I have scant details, other than mother and child's names and dob and that they lived in the Ardwick or Gorton areas. I do not know the name of the father from whom maintenance was being claimed.  Many thanks.

Thanks so much for all your help.  I'm going to take time off to digest all the information you've assisted with, take stock of where I'm up to and decide which lines of enquiry are the important ones  for me and which ones could take me of my original quest given half a chance.  You've been really helpful.

Many thanks.

Hi, been a busy day painting my son's shed. Really struggling to find the family in 1891. Think this ref are john's jnr's elder brother's George and Henry RG12 2796 138 3  & Nathan RG12 3161 110 41.

This begs the question--what has happened to parents, John Snr died?, Elizabeth died, both?

Thankyou,  Hi there.....Good shed painting weather.

I've got the 1881 Census and this shows  JOHN HOWARD Snr (b) 1850 ish and ELIZABETH his wife and NATHAN aged 6.    It wouldnt show JOHN Jnr because he didnt come along until 1883.

On the 1891 census I wondered if I'd found NATHAN aged 17 as a Page Boy  living with what looks to be a Church group headed by Frederic Kranso in Didsbury but this could be a complete red herring?

Then 1901 NATHAN is 27 married to Emily.

I hadn't really clocked that there were more siblings because I've been so caught up with John Jnr and Nathan. At least Nathan is a more unusual name to be searching against !

I've aged ten years in a week !!  :)

Thankyou, yes.    Those are the parents of Nathan Howard and John Howard.    I'm going to be busy tonight (again)!

AAh I think I see what you mean,   On the 1911 Census its as if the name JOHN HOWARD should have been NATHAN HOWARD.  Which would follow, because on the 1901 Census Nathan is 27 and on the 1911 one he is 37.

I had calculated John's date of birth based on that 1911 Census - which of course is this scenario,  was actually NATHAN's dob - 1874 which I already knew was 1874.     Because I had calculated what I thought was John's, I had come to the incorrect conclusion that they might be twins.    Just shows.

Ha Ha I bet you're sorry you got into these postings !

I still can't think what's behind that name discrepancy and also why "John" 1911 is a rubber worker and "John" is down as  a rubber worker on the 1922 Marriage Certificate of Emily Howard marrying Harry Winterbottom - when John died in 1917.   The plot thickens.

Incidentally I still can't open a New Topic, it won't let me do that yet.
