I recently used the service offered by Friends of Flaybrick and had a response within a day. I received a picture of the grave and a list of all who were buried there. If you live local to Flaybrick they will also offer to meet you there and show you the grave. Cannot praise the Friends of Flaybrick volunteers enough!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: 1841 Census help

Yes John Whalley I can see that now! Very interesting because Hilton ended up being an Iron Turner as well. He was only 15 when this census was done so perhaps he was an apprentice or a lodger maybe for this John Whalley.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 1841 Census help
« on: Monday 08 March 21 15:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Just trying to decipher this section of the 1841 census. I believe my 3rd great grandfather Hilton Walmsley is listed on this census. On his marriage certificate in 1854 it states his father is a James Walmsley. On his parish birth record it only lists his mother Charlotte Roscoe as a spinster. I am yet to find a James Walmsley anywhere. However on this census I believe the head of the household is John Walmsley if I am reading it correctly? Also just wondering who the other people are on the census. I wish on this census it listed the relationships, but never mind. Any help deciphering the writing would be appreciated. I think I have attached it to this post! First time trying to do so. I have put a box around the section I am looking at. Also some help with the occupation and location if possible.

Thank you.

Down / Re: Looking for details for James Colgan

Thanks for the info, i do feel like these deaths are for my James and Betty especially as i have further found from other records that they were from Glenloughan which would add up. As would the Will for James to his son John in Glenloughan and with them all being farmers.

So were would I go now to find James or Elizabeth's parents if they are not noted on the transcript of the marriage? I can estimate from the death records that James was born sometime in 1822 and Elizabeth (Betty) around 1823. The church record only states their names for the marriage in February of 1843 also.

oldohiohome: I do not believe the Colgan family i am researching went to Illinois but i haven't gotten too far in my research yet

Down / Looking for details for James Colgan
« on: Monday 07 December 20 15:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I am researching my friend's family tree as a gift for his father for Christmas and have come across a block. I cannot find information for a James Colgan and Elizabeth Quin. Here is what I have so far:

He married his wife Elizabeth Quin on 17th February 1843 in Kilkeel, Co. Down.
They had 7 children (that i know of) listed below:

Mary Teresa Colgan b. 1850
James Colgan b. 1854
Patrick Colgan b. 1857 d. 1857
Patrick Colgan b. 1862 d.1902
Sarah Colgan b. 1865
John Colgan b. 1868 d. 1937
Peter Colgan b. 1870

I know this is the correct James as I followed him through the marriage record of his son John. I found a transcript for James and Elizabeth's marriage but unfortunately neither of their parents are noted only the surnames so I cannot trace either of their birth records.

One record had them down as Jas Colgan and Betty Quin.

On their marriage it says the parish/district is 'Newry and Mourne', and on the notes it just says 'Church: Kilkeel Upper Mourne Roman Catholic'.

I was hoping to be able to get a lot further back as this is only his father's great grandfather and i was hoping to learn a lot more for him.

Any help/advice would be much appreciated. Thanks so much!

I had not previously known he was deceased by 1866 until i posted about it today. William's death record was hard for me to read (i have poor sight) for some parts of it but i had a lovely lady decipher it for me and let me know as at the time i could only make out the profession on the register. I would have passed this information on before hand otherwise.

Thank you so much for the information on Helen Kirkland's family i will certainly follow this up. I will be sure to also check the 1861 census to see if i can track down Alexander. I will look to get the birth record for him from SP also.

I did not know he had another son so that is a huge help! I will follow up on him and see what i can come up with.

I do think i may have found a birth entry for him which lists his mother as Elspat Holm and father as Alexander Fraser in Resolis, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland.
What makes you think that this could be his baptism? The 1851 census says he was born in Nairn, not in Ross and Cromarty.

I'm just making notes on any that i find around the dates of 1785 so that if i do confirm it i don't have to search it out again. I don't want to rely on just census records. I do know that he was dead by 1866 so he died sometime between 1836 (after his wife died) and 1866 when his son died so i don't believe he will be on any census records after at least 1861.

So does that mean they are both from that parish? I just assumed it was customary saying they wer both married in this parish. As i say i am still very new to this and trying to understand records.
