Ireland / John Adams (Agnes Sinclair) 1781 family tree
« on: Saturday 10 October 20 01:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

My name is Bryan and I have been tracing my family tree back to Ireland and hoping someone out there may have additional leads for me to follow as records seem very sparse.

My great great great grandfather, John Adams was born in 1814 in Ireland (region unknown) and married Mary Jane Stewart (born ABT 1809 in Ireland). They moved to Scotland sometime in the 1850's. They had 5 children from what I can tell:

Ann: ABT. 1848
Joseph: 1840 (married Jane Davidson)
Mary: ABT. 1850
Robert: ABT 1853 (married Margaret Draffen)
William: 1842 (married Janet Neilson)

John died Nov. 3, 1866 in Coatbridge Scotland and Mary Jane died May 24, 1873

If his father and mother, John and Agnes had other children aside from John of 1814, I haven't found any records that I can link.

Ireland forum? I set this forum up under beginners and not sure what you mean.

I am pretty sure I located the correct John Adams of 1814 (not sure exact birthday). He was married to Mary Jane Stewart (born about 1809, died May 24, 1873) and he died Nov. 3, 1866 in Coatbridge.

On his death record (if I was looking at the right John) shows his parents as being John Adams and wife Agnes Sinclair. When  l followed Agnes through census and death records, I found John Adams of 1781 which would make sense as she was born 1793. He died May 14, 1870 in Desert, Count Londonderry. I can't find a marriage record of Adams/Sinclair so I haven't been able to confirm if these are all one in the same. Her death was recorded by someone on Ancestry as 1826 in lanarkshire. They may have been married in Ireland but I can't seem to navigate the Irish Genealogy link you sent me.

Thanks for the tips. I followed your advise and I believe I found great great great great grandpa and grandma John and Agnes but now my dates take me pre 1800. Aside from traveling across the world to explore documents in Ireland myself, are there are suggestions that could help me?

It would appear John was burried in Londonderry Ireland and the only thing I've come across is American Adams settlers from the early 1700s also originated from there but it feels like there's still a generational gap.

Is there any reference sites that are helpful for searching Irish records? I can't seem to find any record of my family pre scotland

Wow! Thank you again. There's no doubt that would be my great great great grandfather, John Adams. Joseph's age has been questionably different on every document I've seen but that definitely has to be them.

I've seen a lot of documents mentioning Holytown but couldn't connect the pieces yet 😁

Wow! Thank you, I am very new at this and did not see those names before. I have a subscription to Scotland's people but only see file names so I was feeling deflated. I just saw a link that was posted with an attachment that's gone now. It listed even further back with a name Davidson? Possibly the parents of Joseph who was 47 in 1891?

I was able to trace back the documents from when my family settled in Canada in 1926 and have documents from then, All the way up to their move to British Columbia.

On their original ship documents it lists my great great grandfather, Joseph Adams (54 Budhill Ave Shettleston Glasgow) as the contact back home. The only one I have a birthdate for is for James Lawson Adams (Robert and Mary's son- my grandfather) and that's June 6, 1906. I've tried using Scotland's people and without paying money, I can't see any that I know for sure are my relatives.

Hi there,

My name is Bryan and I'm trying to locate my family tree. My great great grandfather's name was Joseph Adams and he lived in Shettleston Scotland in the mid 1920s. His child Robert Adams (great grandfather) and wife Mary came to Canada in 1926 on the SS Baltic. Robert and Mary and 7 children (Joseph, James, John, Susan, Jean, May, and Ruby) were listed as being born in Coatbridge. Can you help me to locate any info that helps me explore further back. Thanks
