Gloucestershire / Re: Holland family possibly of Chedworth
« on: Tuesday 19 May 15 06:10 BST (UK)  »
Thanks to both for suggestions. I have once again revisited FreeReg and the actual parish records for Chedworth and surrounding areas and there are many tantalizing clues but no actual evidence. Many on-line trees have made assumptions without evidence--eg. that Frances is the daughter of Charles Robbins and Elizabeth Avery but her baptism cannot be found. I will now follow up suggestions and widen the field to surrounding counties(although I have looked there).

Many thanks for your thoughts.

Gloucestershire / Holland family possibly of Chedworth
« on: Wednesday 08 April 15 06:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I have hit a brick wall with my husband's 5X great grandfather David Holland. I know he was married in Chedworth to Frances Robins 7th August 1758 and died /buried 2 February 1826 in the Northleach cemetery of the Chedworth Independent Congregational Church. The records has him aged 88 therefore giving him an approximate birth date of 1737/8. I also cannot find this France Robins although the Rob(b)ins family seems to have a number of lines in Chedworth.

I have all the children of this marriage but am wondering if anyone has come across an appropriate Holland family in the Gloucestershire area? There is one other ? clue. One of the children--Mary-- was baptized in Chedworth 1767 but born a couple of years earlier Dec 1764 in Faringdon Berkshire.

If anyone has any suggestions about lines I can follow I would be happy to hear from them.

Thank you

Berkshire / Re: Holland family Faringdon

Thanks for that Claire. I have had a look at both the IGI and the Chedworth Baptism Register and have found other sisters but not a Frances/Francis

Mary to Charles and Elizabeth 1729
Bettey 1736 and Sarah 1738.

Also  interesting is the fact that Betty and Joseph had a son Stephen Robbins Smith baptized 1759 Coln St Dennis who it seems married Mary Holland 1789 Chedworth. This Mary was the daughter of David Holland and Frances Robbins...it would be a case of first cousins marrying !! There is obviously a link but??  As I said Holland is a very unusual last name in Chedworth but Robbins/Robins is a common name so Betty and Frances could be cousins!!

Anyway thank you for alerting me to this.

Regards
Sue

Berkshire / Holland family Faringdon
« on: Tuesday 31 March 15 22:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

I am posting to see if anyone has come across the Holland family in Faringdon or nearby. I am searching for the birth of David Holland born c 1738 married to Frances Robins in 1758 at Chedworth. I can find neither of these in the Gloucestershire records but I am pretty certain Frances does come from the Chedworth area ( Rob(b)ins is a very common name here.)

I am making this request as a wildcard as when I looked at the actual Baptism record of one of their children---Mary I found the following entry:

Born 29 December 1764 at Faringdon Berks baptized 8th June 1767 Chedworth.

Any suggestions would be most welcome .

Many thanks
Sue

Hi

That's really interesting. I have had a look at various sources and found the baptisms of a George in 1799 , James 1806 and Elizabeth 1804 to John and Elizabeth- all born in Chippenham. Do you have any more information on the John and Elizabeth??
In the 1851 census James Alexander and Eliza have living with them Eliza's mother--Elizabeth born c 1766 in Biddestone. Also interesting is the fact that in the later censuses they are living in a cottage on Lanhill Farm--the main farmer in Lanhill House being Edward Little. I wonder if somehow they are connected and if also this Lanhill is how the enumerator came to Maria's birthplace as being Langhome??

I'd love to hear about any more information you have and what you think of the above suggestions.

Thank you for all that Trish. As you say impossible to prove but certainly worth thinking about. I'll try some name variants in my hunt as I must admit I've only used Balding in my searches. I'll look and see if I can find the sibling Margaret in the Hessett area and indeed any of the other children.

Thanks for all you work.

I did have the two births you mentioned--Robert (from whom I am descended) and Jacob but thank you. There were 3 other children William born 1773, George 1771 and Robert 1770 (who died in 1771.
The marriage from the Sudbury Marriage Licences has the following:
Jacob Presland of Hessett 22 yr s.m. and Susannah Balding of same 25 yrs s.w. at same 22 March 1769 so it seems she was not previously married.

Thank you for your suggestions. Will keep trying.

Hi Jenny
I have this Jane Presland on my family tree- 1st cousin 5X removed!!!!
Her parents were George Presland baptized Hessett 16 Jun 1771 and Mary ?? My guess is that they were married in Essex as the first 3 children were baptized in Colchester. As I live in Australia I am unable to visit record offices personally and Essex does not seem to have many on-line records. Children of this marriage were:
Jane born c 1800 Colchester
Harriet baptized 12 Mar 1812 Colchester
Jacob baptized c 1810 Colchester
John baptized 11 Jun 1820 Hessett

The parents of George were
Jacob Presland bapt 27 Jul 1746  Hessett buried 10 Nov 1816 Hessett ( my5X great grandfather) and Susan Balding born c 1732 and died 26 Dec 1815 Hessett. They were married 22 MArch 1769 Hessett.

Their children were Robert bapt 16 MAr 1770 Hessett bur 13 Jan 1771 Hessett
George
William bapt 25 Feb 1773 Hessett buried 9 Jun 1773 Hessett
Jacob bapt 26 Oct 1775 buried 18 Nov 1775 Hessett
Robert ( my ancestor) baptized 7 De 1777  Hessett died 11 Jan 1858 Stowmarket

I can find nothing about Susan Balding at all.

Hope this helps

Sue
