Midlothian / Re: Annie Cameron - Census
« on: Monday 13 December 21 19:28 GMT (UK)  »
Searching the Scottish 1911 using the index is limiting as you cannot determine the birthplace unless you buy credits.  Have you already discounted the 2 entries in Midlothian - Cramond & St Andrew - aged 18 & 19 respectively?

If she was out of county it will be difficult as there are a great many entries for her name and birthyear

Yes, used my credits on a few Annie Cameronís around that age. None are mine though! Iím hoping with the 1921 census coming out soon, there may be a clue.

Midlothian / Annie Cameron - Census
« on: Monday 13 December 21 17:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm hoping someone can help me find Annie Cameron in the 1911 census, she was born in 1892, Edinburgh and lived there all her life as far as I'm aware.
I know she was at 3 Warriston Crescent, Edinburgh in the 1901 census, living with her father, John Cameron and mother, Bessie Barrett Cameron (neť Hyne). Along with her 7 siblings, Nellie, Bessie, Gertrude, Evelyn, Ian and Robina.

In the 1911 census i can find Bessie Barrett Cameron at 7 Union Street, Edinburgh. Along with Bessie, Gertrude, Evelyn, Ian and Robina.
Nellie, had since moved out and married.

The absence of John Cameron in this census may have been due to him being a Mariner, but in 1901 he was a Fruitier and I am told he had given up a life at sea to pursue a Fruitier career. So, there is a good possibility that he is with Annie.

Bessie Barrett Cameron (neť Hyne) was born in Devon, England, so Annie may have gone to visit family down there, but I've had no luck searching censuses there so far.

Thanks,
Callum

Fife / William Scott - Sailor
« on: Wednesday 08 December 21 16:45 GMT (UK)  »
I have a William Scott that was a Sailor from Fife, I was hoping that someone could help me translate his marriage certificate that states what service he was in.

From what i can read it says,
William Scott in this Parish and Lilly Scott in the
Parish of Pittemweem were contracted November 1st and
after due proclamation married November 4th 1794 being three
times in one Sabbath also a Sailor in the ??? Service.

I know they had one son, William Scott born 1797, also a Sailor but he died before any censuses so don't know much about him, presumably at sea as i can't find a death record for him, or perhaps it had been lost/not made.

William and Lilly were married in St Monace and Pittemweem, the above is the St Monace transcription.

Thanks,
Callum

Thanks everyone for the replies, it looks to be John and Elizabeth. Strange spelling of Barrett!

Northamptonshire / Susannah Barrett

Iím hoping someone could help me find who Susannah Barrettís parents were. Most of my family research is Scottish and Iím stumped here where I feel I should be able to locate further back.

I know she was born in Grafton, Northamptonshire around 1800.

She married Samuel Shrives in 1822 also in Grafton, Northamptonshire.

She died in Devon in 1864.

From what I can see she had 9 children in total.
John (1823 - 1899)
Ann (1823 - 1898)
Gabriel (1826 -
Charlotte (1829 -
Priscilla (1831 - 1901)
Hannah (1834 - 1912)
Anna Maria (1837 -
Ellen (1839 - 1914)
Henry (1845 - 1914)

They mustíve moved to Devon between 1837 and 1839 as Anna Maria was born in Northamptonshire and Ellen, Devon.

Lanarkshire / Re: Ann Orr Born in England?
« on: Saturday 30 October 21 17:25 BST (UK)  »
It look very likely that Ann & her sister Elizabeth married brothers James & Peter.

JAMES RANNIE   Married    MARY GORDON   20/12/1797   Edinburgh

JAMES RENNIE/RAINNIE/RAINNY & MARY GORDON
Ė children Kirknewton and East Calder

PETER 20/09/1801, DAVID 3/05/1807, HENRY ALLAN 14/05/1809
ROBERT 21/07/1811, JAMES 29/08/1813, ALEXANDER LOCKH 18/05/1817

It would be worthwhile looking at the Kirk Session records on SP.

Colin

Thanks Colin, I hadn't managed to find Peter of SP, obviously not searching enough variations of Rennie.

I couldn't see anything about their marriages in the Kirk Sessions, but as for James' brother Alexander Lockhart Simpson Rennie, i see that the Reverend was an Alexander Lockhart Simpson. I had wondered why he had such a long name, and now i know. Thanks for the suggestion of looking in the Kirk sessions

Iím not too sure, just Ann to my knowledge. Iíve looked up the two siblings on SP but nothing of note came up, so itís hard to tell.

According to someone else on ancestry her father, William Orr was born in Edinburgh 1780 and mother, Ann Carfrae in Borthwick 1782, whether thatís just a guess through SP records, or maybe they know something I donít.

Iíve not managed to find anything about Williamís military service, there was a hint on ancestry on a William Orr located in India, but Iím pretty sure itís a different person, as you say, itís common surname.

Iíve looked for death records for her parents on SP but nothing comes up either.

Many thanks for your help Colin.

Lanarkshire / Ann Orr Born in England?
« on: Friday 29 October 21 16:45 BST (UK)  »
I'm not terribly sure where to put this, so sorry if it's in the wrong place.

I have a relative, Ann Orr who on censuses claims to be born in England around 1810. She died in 1900 and states her parents to be William Orr and Ann Carfrae.

She had two siblings born in Kirknewton in 1800 and 1803, (Elizabeth and John), so I assume her parents had moved down to England before then, before moving back up to Kirknewton as she married there in 1835, to James Rennie.

Her father was a Soldier, so maybe that's why they moved down south. Anyway, I can't seem to find her birth anywhere so I was hoping someone could help me with that as I'd like to know in what area of England she was born.
