The Lighter Side / Re: Family rumours have they turned out to be true?

An aunt mentioned in her journal some gossip her mum (born 1878) had passed on to her about an uncle born 1845 being married but his wife had left him.
Each census year noted this uncle as single and lodging with different people, even at one time with this aunts mum and she still noted him as single ???

It wasn't until the 1911 census that I could find a possible wife for him , the certificate proving all along that he was a married man.

The Common Room / Re: Still Born Children

I was surprised to see that some couples put a death in the paper for their stillborn child....noting that the child was stillborn.

Hi Philezra,

I know with my Cornish side that my ggrandfather was referred to as Dick because his father was Richard, also with ggrandfather Nicholas his son was called Nick. I have often seen  a daughter with the same name as her mother called by her second name.

In my Welsh side every child of one family was called by their second name all their lives, and I had to wait for the 1911 census to find out their first names ???

Surname could be Hodgson.

Using Ctrl +     the first name still looks like it ends with an A

The Common Room / Re: A couple of questions on divorce

The question of handing over your marriage certificate has often puzzled me.

I had to hand mind over but have since found out that none of my friends did ???

When I asked my Solicitor how would I prove who I was, he said that the Absolute was my proof of name.
I would have liked it to go in my Family History file, but am reluctant to have to pay £9.25 for a copy of it.
.
I have also be told  that no copies of the Divorce papers since a certain date are not held anywhere. They have all been destroyed since about 1978/9 with the new type of Divorce coming in (no blame) and called irrevocable break down of marriage or something... I didn't get a copy of what I had to sign and swear out either.

The Common Room / Re: What Role would a board of Guardians take in these circumstances?

Thanks to both of you :)

The two eldest boys did move on to be trained as Seaman in an Orphanage for Naval Training...as the Link mentions.

I think the twelve year old who was not ordered  into the Workhouse for some reason went to live in Cornwall with her elder step siblings and their ggrandmother.

Up-date.

The gentleman concerned was removed to the Asylum after spending a month in jail...........his children under twelve removed to the Workhouse

An order was made to sell the contents of his home and provision made for an order regarding the rest of his estate. This was to maintain him in the Asylum until his death six months later, and his six children under twelve  in the Workhouse :'(

The cost of supporting each child was £3 per week in 1921.

One child was just over twelve, so didn't go to the Workhouse. I don't know how she was supposed to support herself at that age. :o

Has anyone any idea at what age children were released from the Workhouse to go their own way?
