30 December 1848 - Wilton, Somerset
Alfred Marke - full age, bachelor, Carpenter.  Father:  Samuel, Carpenter
Mary Pring - full age, spinster.  Father:  Henry, Yeoman

Okay, I really appreciate you guys are trying to help. But Just responding with names and dates and no other qualifying information about what you're trying to convey just isn't that clear.

Maybe it makes sense if you have more experience, but I'm afraid I find it no more helpful than someone replying with:

12 March 2983 - Banana - Middle Earth - Harry Potter. Sorry!

I'll go it alone from now - but thanks for starting me off in the right direction. :)

1861 census - RG9/4023 folio 35 page 11 - Newport

Alfred Marke - 35 born West Buckland
Mary - 33
Mary - 10
Samuel - 7
Sofia - 5
Alfred - 1
William - 2 - nephew, born Newport

Sorry, but I struggle to communicate in lists of just names with no clarifying information or context. Are you trying to say you think Stephen can't be his father because the Stephen I picked was born in Wales - or are you trying to say you think William was born in Wales?

You need to read the info again.

Stephen Mark* is not Williams Father.

1871 in West Buckland;

Samuel Marks 66 Head
Elizabeth Marks 63 Wife
Stephen Marks 39 Son
William Marks 12 Grandson born Newfrost Monmouthshire Wales*****

You need you buy the B/C as noted to establish which Daug of Samuel Mark* he was born too.

His B/C has no mothers maiden name so he was illeg.
This is noted as he names no Father on his M/C

I'm really sorry, but that response is just not clear enough to me as to why you think Stephen Marke would not be his father?

Thank you.

Based on what I'd found, I came to the following conclusions -

Mary Eva Marke's parents were:

Emily SELWOOD b. circa 1860 (West Buckland), d. 1937 (Taunton), married in 1879 to William MARKE b. circa 1857 (West Buckland), d. 1934 (Taunton). Together, they had 5 children: Alfred, Walter, Ethel, Mary and Samuel.

Emily Selwood's parents were:

Jane BROOM b. 1821 (West Buckland), d. 1885 (Wellington), married in 1848 to Elias SELWOOD b. 1821 (West Buckland), d. 1907 (Wellington). Together, they had 7 children: Sarah Jane, Elizabeth, William, Albert Henry, Anna Maria, Edwin, and Emily.

Jane Broom's parents were:

Elizabeth HARRIS b. 1821 (West Buckland), d. 1885 (Wellington). She was married to William BROOM b. circa 1790, d. circa 1860. Together they had 3 children: Jane, Sarah and Elizabeth.

Mary Eva Marke's husband, Elias, appears to be the child of John SELLWOOD (alt. spelling) b. 1792 (West Buckland), d. 1877 (West Buckland) and Grace MARKS b. 1799 (West Buckland), d. 1854 (Wellington).

-------

Mary Eva Marker's FATHER, William Marker's parents were:

Stephen MARKE b. 1831 (West Buckland), d. 1902 (Wellington) - not sure about his wife.

There appears to be another possible Stephen who comes from Wales as a contender; however, I do not believe anyone on my mother's side is Welsh. I do have Welsh connections on my father's side.

Freecen is not complete.  Use either one of the subscription sites - Ancestry or FindMyPast or free site www.familysearch.org

Ah, ok. Thanks. I am actually on Ancestry, so I'll take a look there.

Sorry, I'm still pretty new to all this.

I did a DNA test too, so I am hoping that sheds a little light on who I am. :)

1901 census - Wellington - RG13/2271 folio 38, page 10

William - 44, Emily - 42, Walter - 17, Ethel - 13, Mary - 9 and Samuel - 8.

FreeBMD shows the birth registration as Mary Eva Marke - December quarter 1890 - Wellington, Somerset RD.

Forgive me if this sounds obvious to you, but how did you find this census information? When I am using FreeCen and entering her name and birth year, I'm not getting any results at all.

Re your query above #5

When you found the marriage on freebmd - click on the page number at the side of the entry for more details

I'm such an idiot. I've just been clicking the glasses and info. buttons, looking at the documents and then trying to figure it out from there! This will definitely save me a lot of time. :)

Thank you. Apologies if this sounds like a stupid question, but how did you manage to get her first name from Free BMD? I could find the marriage registration (hence how I knew her surname) - but I couldn't find anything with her first name on.

I don't know how true it is, but I was told by a cousin that her line dries up in terms of records fairly quickly as her family were originally Roma gypsies and so no records were kept.

Hi,

I'm hoping someone might be able to help me trace a great grandmother, possibly from the Taunton area.

I believe her husband was called Frederick Northam b. circa 1887 (Devon), d. 1962 (Somerset), and she herself had the surname Marke - but I don't know what her first name was. Together they had a daughter called Marina.

I'd be interested in exploring that line further too as I know very little about the maternal side of my family.

Any help would be appreciated,
Andy
