The fourth ribbon could be the BSA Co medal, but it doesn't seem to fit in this case.
If it were, as Ken says, it should be at the other end of the sequence.

Since it comes after the CdeG, I'm thinking it's another foreign award.
I think it's the Russian cross/medal of St George, see here for an example:

If he actually died on campaign, then casualty lists and/or medal roll might give you the details.
What info are you actually looking for on this chap? Give us a name and lets see what we find.

42nd Dragoons didn't exist.
I would say it's 4th Dragoons, but even that's a bit of a misnomer in 1878, they were named the 4th Hussars since 1861

2263 Pte William Forrest, 2/1st Foot.
Served in Hong Kong when the battalion was involved in the China campaign 1860 (didn't qualify for the medal). To England 03/08/1860, discharged 15/06/1869.
Born Hamilton, Lanarkshire, enlisted 24/04/47 aged 17.
Papers in WO97/1383

He's listed on the MGS medal roll - 5 clasps for Albuhera, Vittoria, Pyrenees, Orthez & Toulouse
