23934 was Pte Phillip Vallance of the Devonshire Regt.
What info are you looking for on him?

Hi,
He was 1707 L/Cpl Samuel Pitchford, 2/7th Fusiliers.
The information I have is that his DCM was actually awarded for Maiwand 27/7/80 and the retreat to Kandahar 27-28/7/80 rather than for Dej Khojah

Scots Guards were never known as anything other than Scots Guards, I have just checked with my husband who is Coldstream Guards, just had a quick history lesson for my trouble lol
Alison
Sorry Alison, but that's just plain wrong despite what your husband says. Check Shaun's link to the Scots Guards Association.
1831-77 they are the Scots Fusilier Guards

Scots guards would likely be the regiment, not sure about the s s could be a mistake and just meant to be one s

In the period in question, their title was the Scots Fusilier Guards (shortened to Scots Guards in 1877), so S F Guards maybe?

Cheers neil, but not meanimg to be thick but what website would i start to look on.

For what? Births/marriages/deaths/census returns - pretty much any genealogy site will have those, they're bread and butter records.

Service papers, start here:

Indian troops could be entitled to the Afghan medal and Star for sure. That particular group pictured though has a British Army LSGC as opposed to the Indian Army version, so it definitely belongs to a British soldier.

The group does match the 72nd's movements very well, so wouldn't be surprised if if was the right regiment. But of course that means 100s of men...

Ok, so he's listed as a soldier in 1858 then?
Key is going to be to find his regiment. First thing to do is widen out from that date, so 1851/61 censuses, childrens birth certificates etc.  What do they say? Sometimes you'll be lucky and find they give more detail than just "soldier".

He's listed as deceased by what year? So work back and see if you can find a death that matches.

Where and when was he born? Might get lucky and find service papers for him based on that alone.

That record snippet does say 4 clasps to the Afghan medal, but apart from that they're a match certainly.
