Leitrim / Re: Seeking McCarthys - Leitrim place name - can you make this out please?
« on: Tuesday 08 December 09 11:04 GMT (UK)  »
The letters written appear to be Dramahrie, or possibly ODramahrie.

Given that someone unacquainted with Irish names and their spelling has tried to represent phonetically some spoken sounds, this could well be Drumcree (in the civil parish of Annaduff), Co Leitrim.

Analecta Hibernica is a series of volumes produced by the Irish Manuscripts Commission. To give a full reference you would need to give the volume number.

Tyrone / Re: Drumragh, Co Tyrone

The parish of Drumragh included Omagh (Omagh has since spread into the adjacent parish of Cappagh) . The Drumragh River joins the Camowen River in Omagh.

Welcome to RootsChat.

There are no maps associated with households enumerated in Censuses. But you may be able to find heads-of-household in Valuation records, which are recorded by townland, and include maps. For Tyrone, these are held at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI).

The GRO indexes seem to show plenty of Matilda Campbells born in Derry - have you tried them all?

Good work, Shane

OS maps of the period show that Hollyfield Buildings was indeed on the W side of Upper Rathmines Road, slightly north of a point opposite Tranquilla.

Not sure if you are still asking, but anyway:

For your period, Stranorlar is in the civil parish of Stranorlar, the Church of Ireland parish of Stranorlar, and the RC parish of Stranorlar.

Dublin / Re: "Murino" Lodge, Fairview

Marino was a large house, surrounded by a demesne (in which the Casino was built). There were several lodges, at the various gates into the demesne.

Do you know at which lodge your grandfather was stationed?

Antrim / Re: Can anyone decipher this place of birth?

Almost certainly Carncastle, and definitely crossed out, probably by the enumerator, as only County names were to be entered. Thank goodness lots of people entered more detail.
