Regarding the valuation for Ballymacpeake Lower-
Quote
In VAL/12/B/34/10F (1911 - 1929) , 6d is marked vacant. According to the colour of the amendment , this seems to be 1912.
I read the date as 1922.

There are several reasons knowing the informant for Margaret's death is important, not the least being who she was staying with at the time of her death. I've re-checked the Valuation books for Moneystaghan Ellis and Moneystaghan Ballymacpeake without noting any Killoughs or Marrons. There are Smiths in both but going from their Wills fairly well-to-do.

Moneystaghan has appeared earlier in this story as the birthplace of Margaret's 2nd son John Marron. Remember that he was born 25 Oct.1876, birth registered 13 Nov.1876 and Margaret married Michael Marron on 20 Nov.1876. At the time of the birth registration father Michael Marron's residence listed as Glenone.

Off to re-check a few more details before I post more but I wouldn't rule out the 1932 death just yet.

Likely death for Margaret which you can view online for a few credits-
D/1932/182/1022/27/136   Margaret   Marron   21st October 1932   94      Female   Magherafelt

School registers, if they are available, may give an indication of which surname(s) William used when young. PRONI is the largest repository of these but the details are not online.

The Common Room / Re: Where are my DNA Results?

I did DNA test with Ancestry and have had an account with them for years although I currently don't have a subscription. To see my DNA matches I just click on DNA tab top of page once I'm logged in then select from the following options- your results summary, origins, matches, traits, compare, surveys, activate a test, buy another test, know your pet DNA.

Have been going through all the information posted on this thread (still not finished) but think things are becoming clearer. I found a possible death for William Smith's mother and another vital clue about her background. So far, I'm fairly confident that geographically William's connection in Ireland is within  one area of County Derry. Don't want to post more just yet as there's been so many red herrings here already.

Just skimmed through the posts here from yesterday & today and will have to go over everything more carefully but just a few comments about a few misconceptions which could lead to incorrect assumptions.

Sorry, I seemed to be lost in this thread about the 1911 Ireland census and whether or not Margaret was alive at that time. If she was I would presume she would be in County Londonderry, which was a part of Antrim at the time, and not in Tyrone. Can someone find that info again?  Thank you!
Londonderry and Antrim are separate counties as is Tyrone so not sure what the confusion is here.

The other point I wanted to make was the assumption that illegitimate Catholic children were known the the name of their father, is misleading. Whilst it may, or may not, be the case in other parts of Ireland it was not as a rule the case in Ulster. An illegitimate child was often known by the surname of whoever was looking after him/her at the time (unmarried mother or her family, stepfather, mother's partner, foster family, etc.). In the case of illegitimate children a surname could also change from record to record during the same period. For example, name in census might be different than what appears in school register.

It's unclear from the FS record which Tamlaght. I also tried, and failed, to find a matching birth registration.

OP mentioned Greenlough this morning-
Quote
Just to recap:  my great-grandfather was William Smith born between 1863 and 1867 in Greenlough, Londonderry.

However, Glenlough is a separate location near Claudy (not Clady)-

My grandmother's were from the Isle of Skye so they were Scottish, right? Well, yes and no! I noticed that in census records some of the McLeods said they were Scottish and some said they were Irish which seemed strange since it was well-known they were from the Isle of Skye in Scotland. A very old family Bible finally cleared up the confusion. My branch left Scotland and lived in Ulster for several generations before coming to Nova Scotia. Not sure my grandmother ever knew that her ancestors actually lived only about twelve miles from where her husband's family lived since the 1600s!

I'm wondering if there's been a bit of confusion here regarding the place Greenlough?

There is a Catholic Parish called Greenlough (Tamlaght O'Crilly civil parish)- mentioned briefly in reply #24-

Family Search have this record- https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F5PK-BMN
William Smith, male, mother- Margaret Smith, Christening 24 May 1865 Tamlaght, County Londonderry, Ireland

There's also an earlier record which might, or might not, be connected-
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F5PK-9HS
Eleanor Mary Smith, female, mother- Margaret Smith, Birth 14 Jan 1860 Tamlaght, County Londonderry, Ireland

From attestation papers you have the name and address of John's mother which matches the 1901 census entry. The daughter Lavinia's birth registration confirms mother's Christian name and gives her maiden name. The birth I posted for John Todd lists the same parents. Not sure that there's any doubt this John Todd is the correct person.

Possibly mother Maria & son James-
