Oxfordshire / Who was Beaufoy's beau?
« on: Monday 11 September 06 13:32 BST (UK)  »
Thanks to the help I received from the kind people on this Oxfordshire board I have pretty much discovered who Beaufoy was (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,173005.0.html) but now I am looking at her husband's family again.
I don't know too much, I only have him on the 1861 census as Thomas Thorpe born c 1827 a bargeman from Henley on Thames moored at Wraysbury.
MJP and Colinsorigins found some further information which suggests that the surname may actually have been Thorp not Thorpe but I am still unable to find him on any other census.
The baptism entry found & mentioned on the original post gives his birth as April 1819 (bit of a difference from 1827 on the census!) and parents Thomas & Elizabeth.
Can any of you eagle eyed lot spy him anywhere or find anything else for me?
Thanks

Occupation Interests / Gamekeepers
« on: Thursday 07 September 06 14:30 BST (UK)  »
Someone recently put me on to the fact that Gamekeepers had to be licensed. Does anyone know where I would find information on an index of Licensed GK's for Berkshire? I found an address on the Berkshire
Family History site but it is from 2002 so am concerned it is out of date. Also does anyone know what information this might tell me?? Any suggestions welcomed....

The Lighter Side / Do you have a favourite family in your Tree and why?
« on: Monday 04 September 06 14:00 BST (UK)  »
For me it would have to be my Maternal Great Grandmothers family. Our tree was tentatively started some 40+ years ago by my Aunt through discussions with my Grandmother, she recorded her first (unresearched)tree on the back of the only known photo of my Gran and her Twin, at that time my great Great Gran's family was only a mum, dad and a couple of siblings.
Since I took possession of the tree and began full blown research this family has expanded to mum, dad, 9 daughters and finally after 20 years of trying 1 son!!
The reason they are my favourites is that through census research it is clear that they must have been very close, down the years the married girls and their subsequent families lived together in varying combinations and when one of them or their husbands died at a young age the others rallied round and took care of their dead sisters children. Indeed it was tracing missing children in wrong households that lead to me finding more and more sisters!! Along the way I found some of the people my Gran spoke of and the jigsaw has become a lot less holey.

Not sure if this has been posted before.....

Occupation Interests / Lady's Companion?
« on: Tuesday 01 August 06 17:59 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know what duties a Lady's Companion would have been responsible for? It seems an odd term to me, almost like a rich 'billy no mates' had to pay to have company??
Surely a gentle lady wouldn't have had anything in common with a poor person hired to be her companion? What did they do together? Read? Most poor folk wouldn't have read well? Stitch, maybe ?
Also when the lady had real company the poor companion wouldn't have fit in??
Or am I barking up the wrong tree and it was just a fancy name for a ladies maid? Someone who dressed, bathed her etc??
Any ideas anyone????

Oxfordshire / Who was Beaufoy?
« on: Monday 31 July 06 17:00 BST (UK)  »
My Grt Grt Grandmother Sarah Ann Thorpe was born in Henley on Thames in 1856. Her parents were Thomas and Beaufoy.
Thomas born Henley c1827 was a Bargeman and apart from the 1861 census seems to have dodged the enumerators pencil, at least I've not found him. I guess if your barge wasn't in a town on census night you just got missed off?
Anyway I can't find Sarah or her Brother Thomas's birth certificates and have had no luck on finding a marriage certificate for Thomas & Beaufoy. I would have thought with such an odd name she would be easy to find... Well apparently NOT  >:(
Beaufoy it appears did not like being a bargemans wife and is found in all other censii after the 1861 as a sick nurse in various private houses around the country, she gives her place of birth as Henley and date of birth as 1838, 1830, 1835, 1837 and finally in 1901 as 1825. She died in Henley in 1910.
Can anyone work wonders and find her maiden name for me???
Cheers everyone

New Zealand Completed Requests / Help me find my lost Grand Uncle
« on: Wednesday 12 July 06 13:08 BST (UK)  »
I discovered today that the Grand uncle I have been searching for in Canada actually emigrated to New Zealand!! I don't know much about him other than his name was Gordon Clifford Hewitt born Suffolk 1919. His wife was Audrey M (Drew), they married in 1943 and had at least 1 daughter. He emigrated sometime after 1946 to join the New Zealand Navy. If anyone could find anything on them I would be most grateful. This information has come from his Brother who is still going strong at 96 and although I have never met him is writing me his memoires all about my Gran and her childhood!!!
Cheers

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Fresh eyes needed!!!!
« on: Friday 23 June 06 23:26 BST (UK)  »
I have been tracing the Taylor branch of my tree and have so far definitely found them back to 1881 and possibly back to 1841. Prior to 81 the research gets a bit 'squiffy' and I am beginning to have serious doubts about my findings, what I would like is for you fabulous fellow RC's to have a look back past the 81 census to see if you find any alternative families that I may have overlooked! :) The main character of interest is a Robert Taylor born in Winkfield or Sunninghill, Berkshire between 1834-41, he married Maria Short from Windsor in 1862 and they had children named Annie, Henry, Frank & Emily. From the marriage certificate I know that his father was a John Taylor. He, Maria and children lived in Windsor. I am mostly interested in Roberts life before marriage and any possible census matches would be most welcome. Cheers JK

« on: Friday 23 June 06 12:33 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have a subscription to Crockfords directory? I am looking for information on John Marratt Taylor 1820-1911 born in Sunninghill Berks to a John Taylor. I know from his Cambridge Uni record and census info that he was a curate then vicar. Any available information from Crockfords might give me more info on his father. Anyone able to help??? Thanks JK
