Hello Abiam,

Just a thought, is there any chance the surname could be Jemmett?  When I  was a child my Nan had neighbours by the name of Jemmett but that was in Oxfordshire.

Anyway just a thought.

Kind regards,

Hello Abiam,

I'm afraid I still haven't managed to get to the Record Office.  I live in Essex so it involves a fair bit of advance planning and so far the spare time has not been available to me - I will get there one day though !!

Research is going along quite well, apart from one or two brick walls !!

Hope your own research is progressing.

Kind regards,

ANYAS

Hello Abiam,

I have now had an opportunity to look at the 1841 census image and I can see what you mean. I don't think I would have made 'Wise' out of that so well done to the transcriber.  I did check the 1851 census image and it is the same family (although George Senior is by then no longer with us) the image is clear and it does say 'Wise' and same for 1861.  I don't know if you think this is the right George but if you think it is and you intend to start looking in other counties, you might find it helpful to look in the Oxford Marriage Bond Index in the resources board page.  It shows lots of 'Wise' marriages and although they seem to be too early to be of interest, it may give you some leads to parishes that had Wises living in them - just a thought.

You asked me if I knew of anyone that worked in the Peppard T.B. Sanatorium and I said I would look out for anything.  This won't help with actual records but I understand that there was a long illustrated article about the history of the sanatorium in the Henley Standard in May 1998 by Carol Evans .  I don't know if this paper still exists but it may be worth contacting them to see if they keep records of articles, anyway again just a thought.

Regards,

Hi,

I just wondered, and I hope I am not being offensive, if you had considered that she might have been born out of wedlock and therefore given her mother's maiden name.

I had a similar experience with my GGM.  I travelled to London looked at the registers but could not find her.  I eventually found that she was registered under her mother's maiden name but given her father's surname as a christian name!  Her parents did eventually marry and she quoted her father's surname as her surname on her marriage certificate although her birth certificate had a different surname if you get what I mean !!

Anyway, just a thought, good luck.

Hello Abiam,

Afraid not.  I will let you know if I happen upon anything.  My GGF's family came from Rotherfield Peppard and my GM lived in Harpsden (born Maidenhead) so I am often looking at records for Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire.

By the way do you think this is the right George?

Regards,

Sorry make that not born in County,  so neighbouring County.

Hello again,

Sorry to confuse you - George 20 I guess is the son, George 60 is also in the household.

I was just thinking that George 60 - not born in Parish - so perhaps one of the neighbouring parishes maybe Oxfordshire or Buckinghamshire.

I have one ancestor born in Rotherfield Peppard, Oxon but married in Wiltshire then back to Rotherfield Peppard again.

Info came from a transcription.

Hello Abiam,

What I was thinking is that if this is the right George Wise, it could be quite relevant that it states - born in County - No !

Elizabeth 60, Mary 30, George 20, Helin 15 all at Popes Farm

I had a look at 1851 and Elizabeth is now a widow and 74 (?) Born Warfield
living at Hawthorn Road, Bray with Mary 39 and George 35.

Hello Abiam,

There is a George Wise in the 1841 Census that may fit the bill but I am not sure.  Would a farmer in White Waltham age 60, bearing in mind rounding, be of any interest to you?
