Shropshire Lookup Requests / Re: ellen maria evans ? Shropshire

I have checked the 1861/71 census so many times I think I'm going cross eyed and I can't find a William Evans with daughter Ellen Maria or even Ellen.

Thanks for trying

Thanks Wendy, would they have left out her middle name when they registered the birth. Nothing would surprise now though after doing this for a few years ::)

I am unable to find a birth for Ellen Maria Evans.

She married Thomas Lawrence in 1886 in Oswestry and the marriage cert says her name was Ellen. All the census since her marriage states her name as Ellen only except the 1911 when it stated Ellen Maria. In 1911 her age was 50yrs which appears correct when checking the previous census.

The previous census stated that she was born in either Llansilin, Denbighshire(1891) or Oswestry, Salop(1901) and I can't, for the life of me decipher the place of birth on the 1911 census except that it states Salop. If I was computer literate I would try to get it on this site but I haven't any idea how to do that.

I have checked Ancestry and free BMD without success. Her father on the marriage cert was William Evans if this helps.

At the time of her marriage she was residing in Whittington and married in Oswestry

I thought I had a breakthrough when I saw the 1911 census but should have known better.

Many thanks rootschatters for any help you can give me

The only evidence was in the family bible. It stated her name E Lewis but I couldn't work out the middle name. I think she started the bible. There is reference to son John and her husband Thomas Roberts. She also writes about the death of her mother .....Lewis(unable to read initials)

Hi Gadget, glad your still speaking to me. :)

I looked through all the Roberts' for denbighshire/meirionethshire. Those born to an Elizabeth Lewis and Thomas Roberts. I found the same children as you all. I have wrongly assumed they were mine as they were born in Bontuchel which is in the same area where they lived later.

There was also an Elizabeth born 1825/26 written in the bible which was why I thought she was the one I found on the IGI.

I also assumed-wrongly- that they must have died prior to the census.

That will teach me to assume anything won't it!

Again, I am sorry to have wasted your time.

Wow, you have all been so busy on my behalf whilst I've been at work.

I hate to say this but I think that the Thomas and Elizabeth are not the same people.

On the 51 census they are living in Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr.Parish of Maesyrodyn.

Thomas born c1803 Pentrefoelas
Elizabeth born Cerrigydrudion 1807 later census states Pentrevoelas as place of birth

John 13
Elizabeth 11
Jane 8
Catherine 6
Mary 4
Margaret 2

In the 41 census for same parish there are other children

Anne aged 9
Elinor aged 5

I think it is my fault for thinking that the Elizabeth born in 1825 was one of theirs. I am so sorry  :-[

Excellent. Will try and get a copy  that's probably why I am hitting brickwalls with my lot.  There are a lot of my rellies who are non con. I have also got rellies in Shropshire who are non con - would this Blackwell cover all areas?

Once again you have all been really helpful.

Cheers
