Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Census entry
« on: Saturday 06 January 24 23:15 GMT (UK)  »
The word does look like “Couson”.

Relationships on censuses aren’t always as expected, so keep an open mind. Some people would have known they are related but could be unsure exactly how. No proof would have been needed when completing the census forrm. Maybe cousin = nephew or niece? I’ve come across similar anomalies before.

You could do some research about the two to try to determine if they are “real” cousins.

Do they appear together on any other census and if so what is the relationship said to be? If not together, trace tnem on other censuses as who they are living with may help determine their relationship.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Tree from Dna
« on: Saturday 06 January 24 09:39 GMT (UK)  »
Yes she should be able to make up some sort of tree with that information. It depends how close a DNA match she and you are …. does she need to trace her tree forward from this couple to the present day to find out where you and she connect, or does she need to go back further to find the connection.

I don’t know what information is on an Irish 1862 marriage certificate, but if parents aren’t named on it, and if the couple died in Australia, their Australian death certificates should give the parent’s names if known by the informant. That should give you a starting point to research that family in Ireland. You will need to know their religion as well.

The passenger list will tell her which members of the family travelled together. You/she should also trace all siblings of all branches if possible because your DNA connection may not be from the direct line.

There may not be any connection between Aggie and Frederick. Were you thinking there may be? There could be any number of reasons that Frederick adopted Richard, and I’m sure you’ve probably already considered most of them, so I won’t speculate.

The thing that I find puzzling is that if there are a number of males in a family who could be the father, how you could work out which it is (beyond reasonable doubt).  :)

Garsonite, are you referring to lack of close matches with an autosomal test or a y-DNA test?

Well at least that narrows down the family somewhat. Look at the smaller % shared DNA matches as well in case they have trees.

Someone will be able to explain the meaning of segments, as I don’t usually take much notice of them, but I believe that the fewer the segments the closer the match. An intenet search should help explain it for you.

I can’t advise on how you might connect with these families if none of the names in the tree seem familiar. Something you could do is look at their tree to see if any of the places their ancestors lived tally with yours.

(I have a similar situation with one of my close DNA matches - she has a large tree, and a couple of familiar mutual matches, but I can’t work out how we connect. I suspect an illegitimacy in her line as I do know where a couple of our mutual matches fit into my tree).

It could be that their tree is missing that vital person who connects to you. Keep in mind surname changes when females marry.

I’m sure others will be able to offer some more practical help.  :)

Have you looked at the mutual matches of the 64cM match, in case you can place them?

Have you contacted the 64cM match? Do they have a tree? Even a small tree with a few names can sometimes be used to build on.
