The Lighter Side / Capt Robert Falcon Scott's final letter now published ...
« on: Thursday 11 January 07 13:57 GMT (UK)  »
a remarkable letter by a remarkable man.

A colleague and I discussed this yesterday and contrasted the bravery, lack of self pity and sheer humanity of this with the actions of those regarded as newsworthy today.

The 'boy' referred to was ,of course,Sir Peter Scott.
Pre-eminent ecologist of the 20th century,founder of WWF and Wetlands Trust,war hero,exceptional artist,television presenter,author and olympic medalist.

Makes one feel a tad inadequate.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / 1901 - BRENNAN in Huddersfield, W. Yorks

Helping my son's inlaws in looking for:

James Michael Brennan b 20/6/1900 d 6/10/1977 - Huddersfield West Yorks (DoB from Death Cert)

His Fathers name was John Brennan dob unknown, died before 1920.

Mothers name unknown ..... (No Certs have yet been obtained)

Brothers:
Robert b @1902
Leonard b circa 1907
Bernard b @1909

Sisters:
Mary b @1895
Alice b @1899

Delia dob unknown

You would expect that with 3 children alive in 1901, and a known Fathers name even a MisTran should pop out !

The thot plickens however, as I suspect that James M may have been born later or elsewhere - I cant find a Birth Index entry for him !

There are multiple Marys and Alices on the Index in Huddersfield ....

Would very much appreciate another pair of eyes on this one !

Kind regards, ScR

Lanarkshire / 1861 Glasgow
« on: Saturday 04 November 06 10:11 GMT (UK)  »
Bit of a long shot, but I just cant find this family in England in 1861 ...

I am looking for Joseph Baker, born circa 1838 I guess, in Staffs Kingswinford / Brierley Hill but not 100% on that ... occupation unknown.

His widow Susannah Baker (1838, Brierley Hill, Staffs) is on the 1871 English census with her 3 sons:-

Thomas (1858ish) - born Brierley Hill
Joseph (1861ish) - do
and Henry (1865) - born Glasgow.

RG10/2974; Folio: 116; Page: 10

The 10 year old should mean they were in Staffs in 1861 - but cant find them anywhere - hoping some kind person with an 1861 Glasgow Index can see at least Joseph snr, Susannah and Thomas ?

Many thanks in anticipation...
