The Common Room / Birth Certificate Information
« on: Monday 18 October 04 11:02 BST (UK)  »

On a birth certificate from 1886, the format for the mother's information is name, surname and maiden surname of mother.

If the mother had been married previously and then widowed, would her previous married name be noted too?

If the answer is "no" is it likely to be noted in the Parish Register?

Armed Forces / Boer War Soldier
« on: Saturday 09 October 04 15:17 BST (UK)  »

Does anyone know how to find out the regiment my grandfather served in when he went out to South Africa during the Boer War.

As far as we know there was no conscription into the Army but perhaps volunteers were sought.

He returned to the UK in 1904 which was two years after the War ended.  If he was in the Army would he have been allowed to stay there as a civilian?

Any help gratefully received.

 :D
Would anyone be able to do an 1861 AND an 1871 Census look-up for me please in the Halifax district, most probably Sowerby?

I'm looking for Joseph Siddall, mason, with wife Hannah and young son James Albert (2 in 1861) who is my great-grandfather.

Many thanks

The Common Room / Graveyards & Headstones
« on: Monday 04 October 04 11:13 BST (UK)  »

Can someone tell me, when a person died during the 1800's and they were buried, whether in a church/chapel graveyard or a municipal graveyard, would they ALWAYS    have a headstone?  Obviously, the better-to-do family would have been able to afford a stone and a mason to inscribe it, but what about your average man and his family?

Everyone had to be buried somewhere, and I know that sometimes if a family couldn't afford the burial the cemetary officials would store the coffins until the family had saved up to pay for the burial.  Did the cost of the burial, noted in a Burial Register, also include the cost of a stone etc.

Many thanks
