World War One / H.A.M.P.
« on: Saturday 08 March 14 16:28 GMT (UK)  »
Pte George Leslie Crane, M2/178110 Army Service Corps, Mechanical Transport, was wounded in the head by shellfire in the summer of 1918. His injury was reported in the Liverpool Echo of 29 August, where he is referred to as G. Leslie Crane, H.A.M.P., A.S.C.

Does anyone know what H.A.M.P. stands for?

I have his medal card and SWB record.

According to a coroner's inquest report in 1866, Samuel Jones married wife Catherine in 1857 at St Mary's Sydney. She was a native of Cork. (http://tinyurl.com/nq8xs3c - see final column "Death from drowning".)

The only marriage I can see in the BDM index that fits is 837/1857 Samuel Jones and Catherine Donahoe.

I understand that the registers of St Mary's from 1857  have been microfilmed by SAG - does anyone know if they have been transcribed or indexed?

According to the Berlioz Historical Brass website: http://www.berliozhistoricalbrass.org/Schroeder.htm
Most composers of marches during the period after the French Revolution and the Napoleonic period wrote only one or a pair of pieces. Schroeder was an exception, composing at least 11 marches (3 published posthumously in piano version only). It is most unfortunate that facts about him are so sparse, even to having no information as to his forenames.

Does anyone have any biographical data on the composer?  I believe him to be Henry Benjamin Schroeder who died aged 64 in Kennington, South London in January 1819 and who was buried at St Mary Lambeth. However the burial register gives no indication of his occupation.

One of the things I would like to establish is whether or not he was the same Henry Benjamin Schroeder who married Mary Coffey in New York in 1783.

There are a number of London baptisms 1785-1819 of children of Henry Benjamin Schroeder and wife Mary.  I can find no mention of him in London before 1785.

The children whose baptisms I have found are:

Cathe. Phoebe born 1785 and baptised 1786 at St Marylebone

Ann born circa 1786 in Middlesex.  Appears in censuses with her brother Samuel T.

Twins James Longman and John William Henry baptised 1787 at St Andrew Holborn. Address Castle Street.

Henry Benjamin born  1790  baptised 1800 at St Mary Lambeth.  One of the witnesses at this Henry’s marriage in 1812 was “HB Schroeder”.

Richard born 1792, baptised 1817 at St George the Martyr, Camden.  Father’s occupation shown as “Musician”. Address in 1817 was Princes Street, Red Lion Square.

Twins Joseph Cutting and Caroline Elizabeth born 1797 and baptised that year at St George Bloomsbury.

Samuel Thornton born Lambeth circa 1798, baptised as an adult at St Mary Lambeth in May 1819. Father’s occupation shown as “Music Master (deceased)” .

The Common Room / John Tiller troupe - South Africa performances 1914
« on: Saturday 09 July 11 11:49 BST (UK)  »
In 1914, John Tiller (of Tiller Girls fame) sent a company of 50+ artistes on tour to South Africa.

Three of the performers (including my wife's grandmother) were aged 16 or younger and a special license was granted by Bow Street magistrates to allow them to go on tour.

Findmypast has the outward journey on the Gloucester Castle on 30 May 1914.

Ancestry has the passenger manifests for their return to London on the Walmer Castle in December 1914 (with John Tiller himself in 1st class).

Does anyone have information about this tour? What was the show, where did they play etc? Can any reviews be traced?
