Armed Forces / Horse Artillery at Sialkot, India - help identify unit please
« on: Saturday 18 September 10 09:03 BST (UK)  »
Another posting on behalf of Loburt: these two photos appear to be from around 1900-1930.

The second one has captions " B SUBS GUN TEAM and GUNNERS" and "H RHA SIALKOT INDIA"

I think this is probably H Battery of 2nd Brigade RHA which was in Sialkot circa 1920. Any thoughts on "B SUBS" ?

Ireland / "Ex-National" Schools?
« on: Wednesday 23 June 10 11:07 BST (UK)  »
I've seen a lot of references in the Irish censuses for 1901 and 1911 to Ex National School Teachers.

Having looked for other references in newspapers I've come to the conclusion that these people are not ex-teachers at National Schools,  but are teachers at Ex-National Schools. I've even found a reference to an inspector of Ex-National Schools. Can anyone tell me more about Ex National Schools?

My webspace provider has taken down my website. They didn't tell me about it and it was a week or so before I noticed it had gone. When I queried it they said this:

Thank you for your query

It has been found out that your website is running irc bots which is in breach of our terms of service. This is the reason why this has been compromised.

The website was created with TNG version 6 and I will upgrade to TNG version 8 once I've found the hacked file - but how do I find the hacked file? There don't seem to be any new files there, when I look in the "compromised" directory where they have parked my web files, and the files don't appear to have been altered.  Can anyone help ?

Cumberland Completed Lookups / Folder family of Howe near Keswick - Completed
« on: Saturday 08 May 10 13:10 BST (UK)  »
I am researching a Joseph Folder who was a draper in London. When he died in 1829 he left £1,000 to his widow and the residue of his estate to "my brother John ffolder of Howe near Keswick". At least I think that's what it says (see crop). The Will is dated 6 October 1828

This is a bit of a puzzle as I am also researching a John Folder who was a witness to Joseph's marriage but all the evidence I have on him (reinforced by signature similarities) suggests that he was also a London merchant, based in the City of London in the 1790's and in Leyton, Essex in the 1800's.  It seems more than likely that this is the same person - so had he moved to Keswick by the time the Will was made in 1828? I haven't found a death for him in the London area so perhaps I should be looking in Cumberland.  (However I thought I had found his widow Sarah in Leyton in the 1841 census. )

Can anyone help me identify this John Folder of Howe?

John Harold Austin was born on 23 April 1893 in St Petersburg/Petrograd, Russia where his father James Austin managed a calico print works. Sometime between 1904 and 1911  the family relocated to Cheshire, England where they lived in Clarendon Road, Newton, Hyde.  There John trained as an accountant.

On 1 April 1914 he sailed from Liverpool to Philadelphia on the SS Merion to join his friend E J Dyson in Frankford, PA.

His 1917 draft registration shows him residing in Penn Street, Frankford and working as a cost accountant with Barrett Chemical.

In that year he married Isabel Armstrong in Philadelphia.

In the 1920 census he is in Philadelphia  with wife Isabel 19 and daughter Doris aged 1. At the same address are Isabel Armstrong aged 80 (his wife’s grandmother  ?) and her daughter Margaret Thompson aged 42, both born Ireland.

By the time of the 1930 census, John is no longer around. It has been suggested that he may have been killed in a motor accident in the 1920’s. (Can anyone find a death record?)

Doris appears to be listed twice in the 1930 census.

There is a Doris M Austin aged 11, father born Russia, mother PA, listed as a niece-in-law in the household of Frank M Davenport in Philadelphia  . Frank has a wife Sarah born PA circa 1906 with an Irish father. Frank and Sarah were married circa 1925 per the census. Presumably Sarah is Isabel’s sister – can anyone find them in the 1910 census?

There is a also a Doris Austin (12) in the household of Daniel and Isabela Simpson, also in Philadelphia . Isabela was 29 and had first married at the age of 17 so this looks to be John H’s widow. There are other Austin children listed: John H Austin 11, and George 8. Daniel was aged 28 and first married at 21, and there are three Simpson children shown, eldest aged 7, so it looks like a remarriage for Isabel to Daniel in 1922/3.

This John Harold Austin, “son of Mr & Mrs Daniel Simpson” of Philadelphia,   was killed in a kamikaze attack on USS Bennett off Okinawa in 1945. A relative has posted a photo of him. http://bobrosssr.tripod.com/473contrib.html and he looks very like another member of our Russia/Cheshire Austin family

Can anyone help me tie this together? I need to find a marriage for Daniel and Isabela Simpson circa 1922/3, and/or the birth details of  John Harold Austin in PA circa 1920. Where to look?
