Hi Phil and Claire,

John Newton MARTIN from St Austell was a Surgeon.

His probate records suggest he died in Torquay Hospital 31 August 1942 probate Llandudno 30 November Richard Braginton Johns and Vincent Thompson Solicitors . Effects £28,731 16s 4d.

In 1891 he was in Essex studying, in 1901 he was in Essex practicing.

I have been looking to try to tie this man to cricket, but no joy. When he married Gertrude Millicent MARTIN the daughter or W Clarence MARTIN  in New York 7 March 1905 he was listed as Mr John Newton MARTIN of Devonshire.

There are papers at the National Archives re alimony and The Wheal Kitty etc so this is the St Austell man.

Most of the articles re the cricketer are all the same info and a book stating that refs were taken from online sources such as Wikipedia.  :-\

It is there Ted. There are two articles in your first link.

http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/30581719

Thomas West, convicted of abusing a girl under twelve years of age, was sentenced to five years' hard labour on the roads, or other public works of the colony. His Honour said this was a most shocking case, and one that he did lot wish to dwell upon; but if the information had been differently drawn up, the sentence would have been death in stead of imprisonment.

Hi John,

A Big Welcome to RootsChat.  :D

I have split your post from Belinda's thread so that our lovely members may be of help to you with your family without infringing on Belinda's thread (If they do not turn out to be connected.)

I have left the link on Belinda's old thread so that she will find you here, when she comes online. Hope you don't mind.

Link to Belinda's SMEDLEY thread you had posted to

A reply was left for you here. I have decided to split it and make it its own thread so as our members may be able to help our new member John with his family.

MMM Well William and Maria had several children baptised in Morebath

STOYEL Ann Bowden 27 Feb 1814 father Taylor (10 years too late for your Ann)
STOYEL John 7 Jan 1816
STOYEL William 12 Apr 1818
STOYEL Maria 13 Aug 1820
STOYEL Mary 28 Apr 1822
STOYEL Samuel 28 Apr 1822
STOYEL Elizabeth 25 Jul 1824
STOYEL Richard 26 Nov 1826

All lists parents as William and Maria of Morebath father Taylor/Tailor so it is the family I found.

William STOYELL = Maria BOWER 6 Feb 1809 Tiverton

probably children born between 1809 and 1814 but with a daughter Ann Bowden in 1814 sadly they not appear to be your Ann's parents

Cheers Kris  :)
