Family History Beginners Board / Freebmd - the "count" option for marriages...
« on: Tuesday 03 October 23 10:46 BST (UK)  »
I'm researching Swansea in the Second World War and have used Freebmd to count the number of births and deaths registered in the Swansea District during 1939-45. That seemed simple - I just entered the parameters "Swansea" and "Glamorgan" for each year's births or deaths and it produced a result.

I'm not so sure about marriage registrations. Obviously, each birth or death involves only one person but a marriage involves two persons.

So, if I count e.g. for marriages on Freebmd in Swansea during 1942, does the number returned count the records of Miss Black and Mr White getting hitched as one marriage or two? I can search Freebmd for their marriage by either of their names so am I double counting when using the count function?

The average number of weddings in the Swansea district between 1935-38 (from Freebmd) was 2,880 per year (if I've got my sums right) on a population of about 166,000. So just under 6,000 out of 166,000 getting married which seems a bit high to me once you discount the too young etc.

I can't find a Freebmd email address to ask them.

Does anyone have any ideas, please? I'm assuming there aren't any GRO records at this level of detail online? And I don't suppose my local registration office would help?

Cheers!

Scotland / Copying records at the National Library of Scotland.
« on: Wednesday 04 October 17 12:04 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone copy records at the NLS for a price per page, please?

I've been quoted £28+ to copy four letters! The letters might be a few pages long (I don't know) but £28 is a lot especially as I don't know if the content is relevant to my researches.

Any suggestions on freelance researchers, please?

The Common Room / Looking at local death registers...can you?
« on: Sunday 13 September 15 17:08 BST (UK)  »
I'm interested in looking at original death registers to do some analyses on 'cause of death' in a given town for a specific period (19th century). I would not require to record names but date and cause of death, address, sex, age.

Has anyone ever been given access to the registers in their local registrars office for research of this nature?

Or are there other ways of gaining this level of detail?

Thanks for any suggestions.

World War One / Thomas Emlyn Davies (Swansea), died with the Canadian Infantry 1917
« on: Thursday 14 November 13 18:59 GMT (UK)  »
The above chap died on 3 November 1917.

I understand that he had suffered a compound fracture of the thigh though whether this was due to a wound or accident I don't know.

I have a subscription to A***y for the UK so have that info to hand. I also have the first 2 pages of his Canadian service record.

On a Google search I can 'see' that he pops up under 'all Canada, war graves registers (circumstances of casualty)' option that I do not have access to.

I wonder if someone could have a look and let me know what other info is available, please?

I am trying, on another external forum, to get someone to kindly look up his service record...but its in Ottawa so I'm not too hopeful!

Any help greatly appreciated.

A long shot (no pun intended) but does anyone have any info on the above? The factory was at Landore.

Info and photos would be great, please!  ;D

Glamorganshire / Swansea in the Great War
« on: Tuesday 12 March 13 17:35 GMT (UK)  »
I've been commissioned to write a book on the above for publication in 2014, the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of war.

I already have lots of info on lads who served with the 14th Welsh Battalion but would be interested in men who served with the 6th Welsh or the 1st Howitzer Brigade, both of which were Swansea based.

Beyond that I'd be interested in people (male or female) with a good link to Swansea, whether they served on land (in other units to those I mentioned above), at sea, in the air or in the medical services.

I am also interested in those who stayed at home and maybe changed jobs or were in protected roles or were conscientious objectors etc. and have a good link to Swansea. Basically, anyone who left a story behind that helps illustrate what life was like in Swansea between 1914-1918 and a little beyond.

If anyone has letters, photos or other material that is relevant to my research I'd be pleased to hear from you.

The Common Room / Death registration records - access?
« on: Wednesday 19 August 09 19:50 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone been allowed to view and make selected notes from original death registration records in a local registration office 'en masse' for the purposes of statistical analysis for use in a book or local history article? (e.g. address, sex, cause of death, age profile etc.)

Thinking of the Victorian era so nothing more recent than 1901.

I'm thinking of approaching my local office with a proposal. Info on if it has been allowed elesewhere might help my case.
