London and Middlesex / Re: Thames Street, Tower Hill - Giddings?
« on: Thursday 24 November 22 01:40 GMT (UK)  »
I spotted that Charles in the US census as well & he did live in Herkimer County New York which is a perfect match for the memorial on Find a Grave, as It also says died in Canada I did see a sailing in 1911 for Charles Giddings going to Canada aged 78 amongst a few other sailings from UK to New York in various years. ???

The U S census has his wife as Pamela born 1851 in England & there is a marriage on Free BMD for a Charles Giddings to Pamela Haywood Sept qtr 1869 in Aston Warwickshire, that would fit with the newspaper article in 1868.

The name Giddings with various spellings is quite common in UK but mainly in Bedfordshire/Hertfordshire which is were I have an interest but I do agree with you Maddy that to have 2 Charles born c1833 & Gun Makers is very surprising .

Must go to bed. :)

I wonder if this is Charles sailing to New York on the Melbourn in 1863, he is a Gun Maker.

I have come across all this quite by chance but I think it might be relevant.  :-\
In 1851 at 4 Queens Court Vine Street is a family consisting of Andrew Newman aged 52 born Ireland, his wife Margaret aged 50 also born Ireland & their children Margaret aged 14, Mary Ann aged 12, John aged 10 & Catherine aged 8, all born London.

Marriage on Ancestry for Margaret Newman aged 21 father Andrew to Charles Giddings aged 25 Gun Maker father George on Oct 11th 1858 Christ Church St George in the East. A witness was Mary Ann Newman.

In 1861 there is a Charles Giddings born Birmingham 1833 a visitor, Gun Maker, in the family of  Edward Harvey in Dudley Worcestershire then nothing until 1901 when he seems to be at Theodore Street Birmingham, a Gun Stoker. No sign of Margaret with him.

There is also a Margaret Giddings in 1861 born London living in St George Birmingham a visitor in the family of William Clarke, with her is son William A aged 2 months born Birmingham.

From the GRO William Andrew Giddings born 1861 Birmingham mothers maiden name Newman.

Does this all sound plausible to others ???

England / Re: Mary Ann Stoneman 1833-1863 Where did she come from?

If it's any help, according to the baptisms for the three boys in Camden on Ancestry, they were in Victoria Road St Pancras in 1857 for Thomas Henry then at 8 Clarence Grove in 1862 & 63 for George Frederick & James Harold but unfortunately I still haven't found them. ::)

Hertfordshire / Re: Harefield and/or Harvill ?

I'm not sure if this will help any but according to Wikipedia Harefield was known as Herefelle in the Doomsday Book & British History on Line for Harefield has mention of a Harvill Road in existence before 1813. Perhaps that is where the area of Harvill comes from.!

Hi
Sorry this isn't much help with birth records but there is a 9 year old Susan Major on the 1861 in the Foundling Hospital Guilford Street St Pancras as a scholar. Could she be yours.??

Hi
There is a Liberation Questionnaire included for your Basil Frederick Wilson on COFEPOW research database. Last held in Changi, so yes he must have survived the camps.
Hope this helps.

Hi Pam

Looked at Kelly's 1882 & 1886 directories for Bushey but unfortunately there was no mention of your Richard Pipe or a Fishmonger.
