Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help to read RC marriage record
« on: Monday 28 August 23 23:16 BST (UK)  »
I need help, please, to read this 1848 marriage record from St Peter's, Drogheda:- 23 Aug.  Joseph Po___? and Ann Whearty.
In particular I am interested in the groom's surname which has been transcribed as Pover. I think it is something else, but want to know what others think in case I am just seeing what I want to see.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Re: Green Photograph?
« on: Friday 25 August 23 09:55 BST (UK)  »
My OH, a keen photographer with years of experience judging camera club photo competitions, and a sharp eye for trickery, thinks that the left hand looks like a much older person's hand, with slightly swollen knuckles. There's definitely something odd about both forearms and hands. The hands don't look as if they belong to the same person. To me the right hand looks swollen, and is that a faint ring on the middle finger?  The area above the left hand is blurred, and there is what might be a candle almost obscured at the right edge of the photo.  Could this be an early cut and paste job, with "better" hands and arms, not necessarily from the same person, cut out of other photos and literally pasted on before being re-photographed, with a bit of deliberate blurring at the processing stage, to hide the joins?

What follows Sex/Six doesn't seem to be the initials of the Registrar who would normally initial a correction. I'm thinking now that it could be "Sex (altered) to girl".

Might it be Sex rather than Six. Has that column been corrected?

Jayhen6, thank you too.
Based on what I know, g grandmother's sister does seem the most likely person. Now to see what I can find out about her. :)

The earliest known record of Fairbairn & Phimister at the Glasgow address is 1906 and the latest 1914 ( but possibly a bit later); see -

That is useful, thank you.

Thank you, jim1, Millipede & Treetotal,

Would you say the lady has a facial resemblance to my great grandmother in this next photo? She was born 1854, and had a younger sister born 1870 (admittedly older than your assessment of this lady's age) who had 3 children (a boy and 2 girls) bet. 1903-1907.

I may well be wrong again, but I think this photo would have been taken about 1910 when she was was widowed. If so, she looks relatively youthful for a person her age who had borne many sorrows over the years, making me think her sister might also have looked younger than she was.

G grandmother, the unknown lady and my grandmother, all seem to me to have had similar-shaped hands, and where they can be seen in photos, sturdy wrists, making me feel the unknown is related somehow.

Here is the back.

Only date and age wanted, please, to help me work out who this might be.

I have tentatively dated this as ca 1910-11. Does that seem about right?

Also, what age do you think the lady is?
