Essex Completed Lookup Requests / Marriage - Thomas Taylor - abt 1820
« on: Wednesday 01 June 05 00:54 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help find the marriage of Thomas TAYLOR to Mary. Based on the following Census info, my hunch is the marriage was around 1815-1820, in the Inworth to Stanway area.

Here's what I have:
1841 Census for Stanway: Thomas Taylor age 40, Mary age 40, Samuel age 20, Eleanor age 13, Charles age 1.    {no mention if Samuel is a "son"}.

1851 Census for Colchester: Thomas age 50 (born in Marks Tey, Essex), Mary 50 (born in Inworth, Essex), Charles age 11 (born in Stanway).

Any leads will be appreciated. Thanks.
John

Technical Help / Re: Gedcom - help please
« on: Wednesday 18 May 05 21:52 BST (UK)  »
Help please. I'm trying to import GEDCOM files, that I downloaded from the LDS website, into Microsoft Excel.
The results using Excel's  "import wizard" were not that magical ! The data was chopped up. I obviously have to know more about the GEDCOM data format. It's all new to me.

Sussex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Marriage Index Lookup Please - 1787

Thanks Phil for the lookup .... at least I have confirmation of the IGI info, and "both of this parish" (at time of marriage). I'll have to do some investigating for William's birth at neighbouring parishes.

Sussex Completed Lookup Requests / Marriage Index Lookup Please - 1787
« on: Sunday 03 April 05 22:18 BST (UK)  »
Hello - I'm searching for my REED ancestors from Piddinghoe, SSX (in the South Downs). Could someone please do a lookup of the Marriage Index for:

Abt. 1787 (15 Oct 1787 per IGI) at Piddinghoe, SSX
William READ or REED or REID (I've seen all 3 spellings)
married Philadelphia GEERING or GEARING of Piddinghoe.

I'm trying to find out the village William READ came from. Does the Marriage Index provide any residence info for the groom, or any other clues?

Many thanks,
John

The Common Room / Re: Errors in Birth, Marriage, Death database??
« on: Friday 11 March 05 05:53 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks casalguidi & kris .... a major problem is I don't know Frederick's parents. The 1861 Census lists Frederick (age 1) as living with his grandparents William & Sarah Selway in Withycombe Raleigh, Devon. The 1871 Census has the same trio, in the same town. Frederick's place of birth is given as Withycombe Raleigh, but nothing matches on 1837online or FreeBMD (I've tried all combinations of vowels).
It was as a last resort that I tried the Frederick James Selway name match in Wellington, SOM.
I checked today, and the name Selwood appears frequently in the Wellington registry, so there's a good chance that the GRO explanation is correct.

From the 1851 Census, William & Sarah Selway had daughters who could have fathered "our" Frederick, but no son old enough who was still living at home.
Frederick's father could be an older son who was living elsewhere by 1851, or the son of an unmarried daughter of William & Sarah.

Where do I try next?

The final chapter ...... GRO did a 2nd search of their records and discovered an error in their Index.

The 1861 birth recorded at Wellington, Som under 5c 410 actually refers to Frederick James Selwood, not Frederick James Selway as listed.

I received a full refund, but I am now at a loss at finding the elusive Birth record of Frederick James Selway. Any suggestions?

Thanks Casalguidi and kris for your advise. It gave me the confidence to question GRO's assertion that the record did not exist.

I e-mailed GRO and attached the images I had obtained from 1837online & FreeBMD.  Within hours I had a response from GRO, and they feel they overlooked the entry and will repeat the search.

Once again RootChat has been a great source of help, and I hope other readers gain some knowledge out of this exchange.

Hi Caralguidi

Thanks for your very clear expanations - that helps.

Fortunately, I did keep a print-out of the image I located at the 1837online site. It is a typed listing, and is very clearly the information I listed in my earlier message. The typed version is a manual typewriter typeset for sure, so it's a few years old.

So, is this image an actual copy of what is held at the "Family Records Office", and is that the same place as GRO ?

I'm still not clear why the 3 on-line sites have the same information, and yet GRO can't find the reference. Is it that the typed image available on-line is in error, and GRO have their own seperate indexing system?

Any help will be appreciated.
