Surrey Completed Look up Requests / Streatham Park Cemetery, look up request
« on: Monday 12 November 18 20:49 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, my Dad has been passed a box full of items belonging to his parents and one of these is a reference card for Streatham Park Cemetery. We assume it might be the grave of a Binden or a Sullivan family member but we know not which.
Please can someone help us and save us a trip to the smoke?

The Grave number is 15919 Sq 7D in the Roman Catholic section

Thank you

London and Middlesex / King Edward Walk Southwark in World War 2
« on: Wednesday 08 August 18 15:31 BST (UK)  »
I have found my grandmother’s family living at 23 King Edward Walk in the 1939 Census, namely Benjamin S Binden’s family and His inlaws. The story passed down the family was that they returned home after an air raid to find the house destroyed, only the budgie survived!
I am hoping that someone might know if it was this house that was bombed, when I looked on google street view I can see number 23 still stands but the other side of the road is newer, is it possible that the street was renumbered after the war? If not then I must assume they moved to another address that was subsequently bombed.
Thank you.

Shropshire / Photographer J F Wood, More Info Please
« on: Monday 10 April 17 20:20 BST (UK)  »
I have just been reunited with a photograph that belonged to my late mother that I am pretty sure she referred to as being of her Grandmother Alice Elizabeth Pugh (born 1896) as a child. I would be grateful if anyone has any information on the photographer "J F Wood Halfway House Shrewsbury".

The photo is now my avatar

Thank you for looking.

Wicklow / William Dalton and Elizabeth Doyle of Ballinagee, where next?
« on: Friday 10 June 16 21:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi, For some time now I've been researching my Father in Laws Dad who fought at Gallipoli in the Dublin Fusiliers. The only concrete documentation I have found is his war record and an entry in the 1901 census where he is a young boy living with his future in laws in Ballinagee ( his age in this entry is wrongly transcribed). I am getting desperate to establish what his roots are but cannot find a birth record. According to his war record he was born in Dublin but the only evidence I have of him is in Ballinagee.

I'm in Ireland and have just got hold of his marriage certificate. William Dalton wed Elizabeth Dalton in May 1931 in the RC church in Kilmacanogue. The groom's age is frustratingly given as "full", which is no help and his occupation is listed as Trapper (the family story was that he worked on the Powerscourt estate so we assume this was his employer.)  The groom's father is Edward Dalton occupation, gardener. The Bride's details confirm what we already knew, her father was George Doyle, labourer. They were living in Ballinagee near Enniskerry.

I can't find an Edward Dalton in the Irish census 1901 or 1911 with the occupation Gardener although there is a van driver in Bray in 1901 with a son also called Edward which would tally with what we know.
Can someone suggest what we should do next? I think we are going to have to order William's death cert to establish his age and pin him down, though I wonder if there are any workers records from the Powerscourt estate surviving, I hope they didn't get lost in the fire.

Any help would be appreciated, my father in law is not in the best of health and it would be lovely to find out more about his Dad for him.

Cheshire / 1939 Register, g-granny in Lightwood Green, Overton, but why?
« on: Tuesday 16 February 16 23:16 GMT (UK)  »
I hope someone with knowledge of the Lightwood Green area in 1939 might be able to give me some insight.
I searched the 1939 register and found my grandmother and her stepfather exactly where I expected to find them in Garden Village Wrexham but her mother Alice was not there. I searched in vain to find her for about a month and eventually found her by specifying her birthday, she had been listed as Elizabeth A and then the NHS had subsequently corrected her name to Alice Elizabeth.
The address is Lightwood Green, schedule number 18, Station Road( I think)
Amelia Austin, widow born 1868
Amelia Austin, single born 1895
One other holdhold member is officially closed
All of them are " unpaid domestic duties" so I don't think Alice was there for work. At the moment I assume she's visiting a friend but I don't know, if anyone has any other ideas I'd be grateful if you could share them.
Googling "Amelia Austin, Overton" only resulted in a newspaper report about an assault case, interesting but not much help.
Thanks for reading this.

Denbighshire / Edwin Edwards, bricklayer, Garden village Wrexham
« on: Saturday 06 February 16 00:48 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to follow up the life of my Nan's grandmother born Jane Pugh in Pontrobert, she married an Andrew Dorricott in Shropshire and as a widower married Edwin Edwards (batchelor) aged 47, in 1923 ,the location of the marriage was the parish church of Rhosddu (St. James? I presume), his father was Edward Edwards (deceased) a collier, both bride and groom were living at 75 Ffordd Estyn, Garden Village at the time of the wedding.
When I ordered the marriage cert I hoped I could use the info on it to pin them down in the 1939 register but can't find an Edwin and Jane Edwards that match. Can anyone help me find out what happened to this couple after they married? Any other helpful info gratefully received.
Looking at the 1881 and 1911 census for Wrexham my favourite candidate for Edwin is the son of Edward and Hannah, do you agree?
Thanks for reading this post, hope it makes sense!

London and Middlesex / Home of the good shepherd, Barnet
« on: Saturday 22 September 12 12:47 BST (UK)  »
Please can someone tell me anything about The Home Of The Good Shepherd in Fulham.
I have been researching Margaret Tracey, who married John Sullivan in St Georges Catholic Church, Southwark in 1829.
The only evidence of her existence I have for her prior to that event is an entry in the birth register for Rhode, Offaly in 1864.
In the 1891 census, I have found a Margaret Tracey born Ireland, occupation domestic servant resident at the above named institution, I'm not sure this is her and would be grateful for any insight.
Thanks, in anticipation.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Another picture for you "Sherlocks"
« on: Sunday 28 February 10 00:36 GMT (UK)  »
One thing I've discovered thanks to this site is that I'm not the only person who picks up strays- family pictures that have lost their families that is. I've been picking them up since I was a nipper, I hope I didn't inherit this trait, it would explain some of the pictures my grandparents left me!
Anyway, I found this picture on Birmingham's Rag Market. There is no writing anywhere on it, it's pasted on very stiff card and measures 14.5 by 9.5 cm.

Wouldn't it be great to be able to name this pair and the house, unlikely but there are some clues.

My guess would be this is a head gardener, hence the bowler hat, and housekeeper or cook. I think the space between them points to them not being a married couple.
Over the lady's left shoulder you can make out a conservatory and in what must be a huge window behind the jolly gent is a very impressive porcelain objet d'art, a bowl encrusted with flowers with dolphins on the stem on a pedestal, certainly an expensive item new, must be worth a few bob now!
Over to you, what do you think?
Would this image be reversed?

Incidentally, it's probably fancy to think we can pin real identities to this couple, should we fail perhaps we should invent a back story for them, they look like a proper pair of characters.

Shropshire / The Post Office Inn, St Michael's st, Shrewsbury
« on: Thursday 28 January 10 21:00 GMT (UK)  »
On his wife's death cert, Robert Watkins gives his profession as "Stone Sawyer and Licenced Victualler of 91 Saint Michael's Street". I have looked this address up in Kelly's Directory for 1913 and this is The Post Office Inn (not to be confused with The Old Post Office Inn on Milk Street) at that time the landlord is Ernest Albert Saunders. There is a Robert Watkins listed who is a fried fish seller, could this be the same man?

Does anyone have any information about this pub, which I believe was next to the Maltings, a picture would be great but any story will do. Is there any record of Robert's association with this or any other Shrewsbury pub (he and his children were there in the 1911 census)?

(I have already seen the site "historic hostelries" great site but no use here)
Thanks for reading
