One thing I've discovered thanks to this site is that I'm not the only person who picks up strays- family pictures that have lost their families that is. I've been picking them up since I was a nipper, I hope I didn't inherit this trait, it would explain some of the pictures my grandparents left me!
Anyway, I found this picture on Birmingham's Rag Market. There is no writing anywhere on it, it's pasted on very stiff card and measures 14.5 by 9.5 cm.
Wouldn't it be great to be able to name this pair and the house, unlikely but there are some clues.
My guess would be this is a head gardener, hence the bowler hat, and housekeeper or cook. I think the space between them points to them not being a married couple.
Over the lady's left shoulder you can make out a conservatory and in what must be a huge window behind the jolly gent is a very impressive porcelain objet d'art, a bowl encrusted with flowers with dolphins on the stem on a pedestal, certainly an expensive item new, must be worth a few bob now!
Over to you, what do you think?
Would this image be reversed?
Incidentally, it's probably fancy to think we can pin real identities to this couple, should we fail perhaps we should invent a back story for them, they look like a proper pair of characters.
