Cambridgeshire / WARD's Bakery at Whittlesford
« on: Friday 26 September 08 20:03 BST (UK)  »
I would welcome any information about the bakery at Orchard Terrace, Whittlesford which was ran by my great grandfather James Ward and his son, my grandfather, George Ward from around 1870 to 1945.  George's brother and nephew William and Fred Ward established another bakery in Hinxton.
I have census and parish register material but nothing in the way of trade directories, etc.
Many thanks

Norfolk Lookup Requests / Re: Lookwoods in West Norfolk
« on: Thursday 25 September 08 22:19 BST (UK)  »
Thanks very much Bee! Well spotted!
I've been using Hugh Wallis's IGI Batch Numbers list of parishes, but this doesn't mention Methwold. So I assumed Methwold wasn't on IGI but clearly it is. How can I access it to take the Lockwoods back further?
Many thanks

Norfolk Lookup Requests / Overtons of West Norfolk
« on: Sunday 21 September 08 22:39 BST (UK)  »
My 6gt grandfather is John Overton, who I assume was born in roughly 1710. He married Susanna and had two sons in South Acre, near Swaffham. These were my ancestor John Overton (bp 9 Oct 1738) and Christopher Overton (bp 24 Jan 1740).

But where were John Overton and Susanna married?
And where was John baptised?

These events did not happen in Swaffham, South Acre, East Lexham, West Lexham, Sporle with Palgrave and are not to be found on IGI.

Assistance greatly welcomed.

Norfolk Lookup Requests / Greefs and Latewards of West Norfolk
« on: Sunday 21 September 08 22:19 BST (UK)  »
My 4gt grandparents are Thomas Greef and Mary Lateward. They married at Downham Market on 13 Apr 1793. Thomas was by then a resident of Swaffham. Mary was living in Downham Market.

Thomas and Mary had 5 children baptised in Swaffham between 1794 and 1805.

Neither Thomas nor Mary's baptisms figure in the Downham Market or Swaffham parish registers, so I am assuming that they were from villages in West Norfolk.

But from where exactly?

Any help greatly appreciated!

Norfolk Lookup Requests / Lookwoods in West Norfolk
« on: Sunday 21 September 08 22:10 BST (UK)  »
My 5gt grandmother Mary Lockwood (b c1751) married John Young in Northwold on 15 July 1776. Miraculously, her headstone in Northwold survives to this day. She died on 19 July 1835.

There are no Lockwoods in earlier Northwold registers, so I don't know where she came from. All I know of her family was that a William Lockwood was a witness at Mary and John's wedding.

Any ideas about where Mary Lockwood was baptised around 1751?

Many thanks

Suffolk / Re: Castles around Rickinghall
« on: Sunday 21 September 08 21:59 BST (UK)  »
Thanks Suffolk Sue
I can't find Great Barford on IGI. Is it? What name did that Castle child have who was baptised in 1809?

I have found William Castle and Lucy White's son William Castle baptised on 27 Jul 1814 in "Suffolk County bts" wherever that is!

I've previously noted in the 1841 census farmer William Castle born about 1781 married to Sarah (born about 1786) living in Stanton with a son  John Castle b c1811.

Has anyone out there got access to the Stanton parish register?

Thanks again

Suffolk / CASTLES around Rickinghall
« on: Sunday 21 September 08 20:46 BST (UK)  »
My 3gt grandfather Henry Castle married Ann Garnham in Rickinghall Superior. According to the 1841 census, Henry was born in Suffolk around 1806. His burial entry in 1845 suggests he was born around 1808. He was not baptised in the Rickinghalls or in Botesdale. The greatest Castle presence I've noticed was in nearby Stanton.
I have been stuck on this for several years.
Where was Henry born/baptised?
Help greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Thanks Biker
I hadn't spotted the IGI reference for George Ward in Shoreditch. I've found the marraige of George Ward and Phoebe Parker in Shoreditch in 1788. Still possible, but I reckon my George had different parents and was only a fleeting visitor to London.
Happy New Year

Thanks Kath
No, I'm afraid that's all I know, although I would guess they emigrated in the later 19th century.
