Thank you Kirsty - good to see a fresh set of brains on the case!

I think I have James in the 1891 as well. Living in Heggies Wynd, Kirkcaldy and Abbotshall, Fife. With him are his wife Jane and his sister 'Maggie'. James is a Quarryman, which is the occupation both on his marriage certificate and the 1881 census I found.

If anyone would like to have a look at the 1881 census it shows James Livingstone, lodger, living at West Port, Kilsyth. He is with Agnes Shaw, widow, aged 38 and her daughters Jane Shaw age 2, Agnes Simpson aged 8 and Catherine Simpson aged 10. I think Agnes and Catherine may be stepchildren. I wonder if they are some relation to the George Simpson who Margaret married - or just a coincidence.

Anyway, this is all very interesting but unfortunately is not yet leading us to James senior - wonder where the b....r went?

Sancti - do you know any more about William - he must have left the poor house and joined the Navy. Wonder if he stayed in the Navy after his marriage and would love to know why his address on the MC was Liverpool. If he was in the Navy and possibly living in Liverpool how did he find the time to meet and marry a girl from Dunfermline?

Just found a William Livingstone age 25 in the 1881. He is a stoker in the Royal Navy and on board HMS Caripfort (according to Ancestry) at anchor in Simons Bay Cape of Good Hope. He was born in Dunfermline. Wonder if this is him?

Have you got any more details from William's marriage cert. What was his occupation. What was he doing putting his residence as Liverpool when he got married in Fife? Dale Street is right in the middle of the business district of Liverpool city. In fact, now I think of it, in the 1841 my 4x ggrandfather was a blacksmith in Dale Street.

Curiouser and Curiouser.

I'm currently tracking down what I think might be the younger James, living with an Agnes Shaw and her 3 daughters/step-daughters in Kilsyth in the 1881. If Bannockburn is anywhere near St Ninians, it could be him.

Just had a look at Margaret's marriage certificate (1902) and her father's occupation is Miner. George Simpson's father James is also described as a Miner. Interestingly, George is described as a Coal Miner.

I am now wondering if instead of looking for a Gold Digger we should be looking for a Coal Miner.

On James' death cert in 1919, which is the only document which mentions gold digger, his age of death is out by 3 years (compared to his birth), his mother's name is given as Ann with no M.S. and he is a widower. The informant was Mary and I can't read the surname and she is described as Occupier (whatever that means). James died at 15 Colonsay Place, Buckie.

So I am thinking maybe the informant didn't know the full details of James' family and maybe James senior was a coal miner and not a gold digger. Also perhaps he didn't leave Scotland, just moved away.

What does everyone think?

I'm just checking out the marriages and deaths of James' children to see if the places these events took place can throw any light on where James might have been.

I have Samuel's marriage in Beath 'cos I already his details from the census. Can anybody confirm whether William married in Glasgow (Helen Dennistoun) or Dunfermline (Cecilia Robertson). I assume it is Dunfermline but it would be better if someone can confirm this. There is only one James marriage for 1884 to Jane Findlay in Cullen in Banff.

There are 4 Margaret Livingstone's married in 1902 but one is Margaret Brown Livingstone so I assume I can forget about her. The other three married:

John Fairgrieve (Gladsmuir East Lothian)
George Simpson (Leith North)
Richard Waters (Bonhill Dunbarton)

Does anybody know which one Margaret married and does anybody else think that 42 is a bit old for a first marriage (for those days).

Regards

I sent it to my daughter as well, she'll love it. Roobarb, I looked best as a Manga cartoon too. My husband looked best as a drunk!

Seriously, I put a photo of my mum in, she died when she was 32 a long time ago, and aged her. She looked just like her sister does now. So that was great for me.

How did you manage to get distracted by lion cubs, I thought you were up in Geordieland?

I'm giving my brain a rest for the moment and I'm going to have a look again at all the information a bit later on. All of those details that Jacci sent to us need checking against census returns and the families tracking.

I had a little look for the son James yesterday but couldn't find anything obvious. I'm sure that now we must have enough information for a new search.

See you later.

That info Jacci has just put up is really good. If he was born James Livingstone, there is a good possibility one of them is him.

Jacci you are a goldmine of information.
