Lancashire / Manchester Newspapers & Football Clubs
« on: Saturday 29 April 17 20:31 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone advise me regarding newspapers and Football Clubs from the Manchester area please?

I am researching my girlfriends late father Terence (Terry) Watkins (b. 21 Sep 1932, South Wales d. circa 2012). He was married in 1955 in Barton, Lancashire.

My mother-in-law has given me a brief case with old files which Terry had kept. In it were newspaper articles from when he was a footballer. There was even a 'match ticket' type file from Bolton Wanderers inviting him for a trial, dated 24th July. There is no year but we believe it was in 1951.

On Thursday, 17th May 1951 The Joural printed an article with a team photo which read that on the Saturday previous (12th May), Terry's team ROF Patricott beat Schofield Rovers 2-0 in the Ald Amos Trippier Shield Final. I don't know where the final took place, or even much about the competition but the goalscorers were Fewtrill & Anderson - maybe these names means something to anyone?

There is another newspaper, this time dated on the 9th may 1958 and in the Clifton & Worsley News, and again is a team photo from Cloride AFC and they had rather a successful season. It said that the Clifton side won the South-East Lancashire League, League Shield and Moore Cup. They were also semi-finalists in the Manchester Junior Cup.

Can anyone with any local football knowledge help me please?

Staffordshire / Wolverhampton Wanderers
« on: Thursday 27 April 17 19:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi. I am hoping that there is a knowledgeable Wolves supporter who is able to help me trace the player in this picture. The picture was taken at Hillsborough, Sheffield Wednesday FC during the 1950's. The player I am looking for is on the stretcher!

I appreciate that it isn't a fantastic picture of the player in question but I wondered if anybody would know this?

My grandfather was in the St Johns and week in week out attended both Bramall Lane and Hillsborough - whichever team was playing at home that week. My grandfather is the one holding the stretcher in the middle and attending to the injured player.

I appreciate any help than anyone can offer me.

Meath / Family Legends
« on: Sunday 23 April 17 19:42 BST (UK)  »
I have been asked to research my girlfriends family, and I have been told that there is a 'family legend/story' that one of her ancestors was born illegitimately to the Lord Meath of Ireland.

I have been fishing as an amateur genealogist since around 2002 and from experience have learnt to take these stories with a pitch of salt unless proven otherwise.

With this I have taken it upon myself to prove/disprove this legend once and for all. However my knowledge of Irish records is a little thin as I've never (really) had to research them.

For something like this could someone give me any guidance as to how one would go about proving this particular family legend?

Wales / Watkins Family - South Wales
« on: Saturday 22 April 17 18:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I am searching for the Watkins family in South Wales. More pacifically I am looking for anyone on here who has the same interest.

There was a Terrence Watkins (b. Tredegar, 2109/1932) and I believe his father was William John Watkins (b.1899).

I am not looking for any census records at this point, just people currently on RootsChart whom are searching the same family.

I am looking for a marriage of a William Lundy to Jane Catherine Cummins (nee Chater). William was born 1859 in Louth, Lincolnshire, and Jane was born c1855, Sunderland.

In the 1901 Census they are living in Wigan. William is aged 41 and a Watchmaker. Jane is 46.

Jane's previous husband was Septimus Cummins, who died Q1 1889 in Darlington (aged 39).

I would appreciate any help anyone can offer me.

Lincolnshire / James Freer Lundy
« on: Thursday 24 November 16 21:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

Can anyone please help me with my research?

I am trying to determine the parents and subsequent siblings of James Freer Lundy born Caistor, Lincolnshire 1828. Research on Family search shows the baptism of James Frere Lundy 26 Feb. 1828  Caistor, Lincolnshire, and his parents are noted as James Freer and Sarah.

However, an article on the internet indicates that he was the second son of Joseph Lundy, a saddler living in Driffield and his wife Sarah.

All this information is very contradictive and would be great if anyone can clear this up or give me a better insight as to which direction I should be heading on this one.

Thanks,
paulmh

Lancashire / 9 March 1946...
« on: Sunday 20 November 16 09:00 GMT (UK)  »
.. Is the date that the Burden Park disaster took place, tragically killing 33 Bolton Wanderers supporters and injuring around 400 others.

For my new website theawayend.weebly.com, I am, looking to delve into the history of such footballing accidents. I have several newspaper reports from around the time but the one thing I don't have (which I would like to include) is a match report from the game.

The game itself was an FA Cup tie against Stoke City on 9th March 1946 and it ended in a 0-0 draw. English football was still without a competitive league despite the war ending and the FA Cup was played over two legs. The first leg had already seen Stoke win 2-0 a week previous and that draw saw the Potters advance to the semi-finals.

If anyone can find a report on both games it would be gratefully appreciated.
